I have training as a K9 Behaviour Specialist, I would avoid allowing the dog to lick a wound as much as possible. The behaviour can rapidly become obsessive, worsening the injury. Bandage it and distract the dog when he tries to reach the area. After a few minutes/hours, he will hopefully forget about it enough to sleep or carry on.
