I don't know what your budget is, or maybe it comes out of club funds, etc. But I would get them each a PSP, add a solid pocket knife, a good LED light, a Nalgene bottle, and one of the new AMK heatsheets that are more flexible. If there's money left over, get them each a pocket FAK.
For the PSP, add in some Katadyn Micropur MP-1, matches wrapped in foil or mini-bic. It's not really advertised, but you can get AMK to put your SciFi club's logo on the kits. I'm not sure how many you would need, but this would not only be some cool geek cred, but it gives money to ETS.
If you go that way it supports ETS, if they can afford it, you can get them RSK's and Doug Ritter Special Edition MkII Photon Freedom Micro. You should be able to get the main components in one place:

If your budget is super small, the PSP is still a top notch value and you would have a hard time beating that even if you hand-make a lot of these.
