OK, as I've said before in other posts, I don't fish. I've gone fishing before, I know how, I just don't like the taste of freshwater fish. I carry the fishing gear in my kits becuase I just grin and bear it when I have to eat trout. I was recently asked by a few friends to help them assemble thier own kits. Like me, they know how to fish, they just don't. I was thinking of something like this: It's 2 #6 and 6 #10 hooks, 5 #3/0 sinkers (so claims the package), and a pair of size 12 swivels. I can slip it all into the vial, which is a 5/8 dram bottle. About the same size a .45ACP cartidge, or as big around and a hair more than half the length of an AA battery. It would be given to my friends with about 30" of 20# test braided spectra line, same packaging I have in my altoid tin kits. It's shown with about 20 feet of 12# test monofiliment, becuase I had that on hand prepacked. Do people feel that is sufficent? My second question is, if that quantity of tackle and monofiliment is suitable for a PSK-class kit, what would they be willing to pay for this as module for a small survival kit? I can bang these out in about ten minutes, including the line, and I have a bunch of these little vials left, much more than I have teflon septas, and I was thinking of eBaying them as modules. If I do, I have every intention of pointing out is a part of a kit, not a kit, that it needs other stuff. I'm broke, not unethical.

The label alone will sell it, it looks, for lack of a better term, finished. Good idea, Ebaying it. As far as the price goes, auction off a few and see what they bring. Oh, and good luck with it, I can see this turning you a tidy profit, I just wish I had thought of it first .

I'll buy one, all you had to do was mention .45 ACP Seriously, what price did you have in mind?

Oh, I'm casting about for ideas on the price, if you'll pardon the pun. :P
I'm probably going to put one up in the next 24 hours, run it as a 7 day, and see what I get.

Here's my personal mini fish kit, in a SparkLight sized container: Here's a second one all packed up: Here's the kit in use: The kit is an original design and can be copied for personal use only... M

I see that as a nice little module. I think the glass vial is a bit overkill for the fishing kit. However, it is a nice perk....should I buy one I would likely dump the contents into the plastic bag and use the vial for something else.
Many times folks trying to make up a kit are faced with buying a box of 100 hooks in 2 or 3 sizes and then only using a few....this alone could make a module like this a useful purchase.
Adding a 2/0 or 3/0 gaff hook would really be nice.

Part of why I went with the glass vial is becuase they have medical grade caps. Not teflon, but decent. Having spoken with a couple of lab techs I know, I concluded that whatever water vapor in there was all there was ever going to be in there, and the bottle itself is non conductive, so from a corrosion point of view, those hooks won't degrade in a hundred years. The glass also can't be pierced by the hooks, unlike the bag. And the little buggers are tough- I accidently stepped on one after knocking a bunch of the them on the floor, and they didn't break even though I had boots on and was on tile floor. And the trapped air provides enough bouancy to float, at least in tea (long story) so when someone foolish decides to use it as a bobber, so long as they make the loop right, it will work.
That, and I like the little vials.

The exploratory sale is at cost, for the first one. See how that goes.

You have a bid! No way I'm letting it go for that price though

That's a pretty good deal on those kits. I've been debating on including fishing gear, mostly because I really suck at fishing. Even with all the proper gear, I can't catch a fish unless it's sitting on ice at the supermarket, so I figure trying to do it under stress probably isn't going to work either. What do you people use for bait? How do you rig it up, on a pole or something? Are there any other uses for fishing hooks and weights other than fishing?
I should probably carry some fihsing stuff with me, because if I ever was lost, the easiest way to get found would be to start fishing without a license. I'll probably have the dept of fish and game on me even before my line was in the water.

I won the auction, and the kit arrived today. If possible, it's even smaller than I anticipated. Nice kit. Looks like a winner.

I don't fish much either. I don't even like fresh water fish all that much. But when I'm camping for an extended period, I fish to lighten the ration load.
Last time I went out, I used this (in slightly different packaging), with some crickets. Tie the line to my walking stick, stick the hook in a cricket, and got two fish on three crickets.
I would also use the fish hooks for things other than fish in an actual situation. Birds will go for the right kind of bait when it's on a hook. Horrible, but no more so than snaring. Squirrels and chipmunks will also do the same thing with bits of fig newton or granola bar that's been chewed into a paste. Easier and faster than a figure four trap.
As for the weights.... really bad slingshot ammo?
