Loc: Just wandering around.
A group of us were sitting around discussing solar ovens when one mentioned using a space blanket for a reflector. We have used the turkey baking bags in more complex solar cookers. Has anyone tried a space blanket with a turkey bag (what are they called?) for a field expedient solar cooker?

In general, solar cooking works great and we use it a lot when we are in the lower lattitudes. Seems like the space blanket/turkey bag concept should work great.

What do you mean by a solar oven? Only trick I know of consists of turning a space blanket(s) or a large chunk of tin foil into a parabolic reflector for a solar furnace. Fun bit is trying to get the foil/blanket as close to a perfect curve as possible.

I keep thinking that the nearly ubiquitious satellite dishes would make a great solar reflector. A dish, a can of spray adhesive and a solar blanket and you'll be burning up meals in a hurry.

And those great big dishes from the 70s and early 80s! Your aluminum pans will be a heap of molten metal!

I think he means a solar oven like this: http://www.re-energy.ca/t-i_solarheatbuild-1.shtml

... rather than a parabolic incinerator.

They're called "oven roasting bags".

And I don't think they would be too much different from foil as far as reflection is concerned.
