Andy has agood suggestion on just buying vicegrips. I have a pair of the smallest four-inch ones, and they are very durable. I noticed that many people are suggesting the Micra, but personally I don't like this tool because all it really is is a pair of scissors, and who needs that if you have a knife? I have used the SOG Crossgrip ( http://www.sogknives.com/crsgrip.htm) for years and I am very happy with it. It is about the same size as a Micra, but it has pliers and best of all, SOG's amazing design which incorporates compund leverage, making the jaws pinch much harder than you have to. I would highly recommend this tool.

I love my Micra, and I don't think I've ever carried it alone.

I've long ago lost track of how many times, when I've been asked if I have a knife, or needed one in a public view, the Micra's inoffensive tiny blade and more useful scissors have spared either having to lie, or the embarrassment, alarm, or perhaps even repercussions of revealing the nature and/or location of my REAL knife or knives. Maybe that's not a lifesaving function, but it's important in a lot of social venues, and it's well worth it's miniscule size and weight for daily carry.

I see your point, but I find pliers more useful, and at no more weight than the micra my crossgrip is great. It also has the same size of 'inoffensive tiny blade' that the micra has, which was the knife I was referring to.

I agree - in EDC the Micra is the most used/useful little tool I've ever carried. I could do without it in the woods... but I don't. Prol depends on one's work environment.

And I thought I lived in a harsh, PC, paranoic state! Even here, I have no concerns about publicly using an EDC knife which is normally includes some kind of full sized (91 mm) SAK. I have never seen anyone look askance on it. I've also seen a number of other lawyers (including women) with or using them, e.g., using scissors to trim a photo in deposition. I especially like the Victorinox can opener. In addition to the obvious use, it makes an excellent staple remover, and a good opener for packages. A while back, my secretary lent me her Swisschamp, when I didn't have a necessary tool. Naturally I observe the legal proprieties re carrying any sharp in a Govt. bldg. (i.e., it's prohibited).

By the way, I do agree on the usefullness of scissors. I use & like the scissors on the SAK & Wave. It is the main omission from the Supertool. I haven't tried a Micra yet

John

>>And I thought I lived in a harsh, PC, paranoic state!<<

Perfectly describes where I live- but then, it might also depend on the nature and/or location of your REAL knife....

In any case, I didn't appreciate the value of the Micra as a "social buffer" until I stumbled on it by accident. Handing someone the Micra with "sure, here" is a much more relaxed answer to "do you have a knife on you?" than "er... ah..." or "Oh, ----, did I set off a metal detector?" :-)

That having been said, no offense, but lawyers probably carry about anything they want. They can draw on considerable legal resources in their defense without bankrupting themselves if necessary, and they have less reason for concern about image. if I were a lawyer these days I'd want to carry a lot more than a knife. That's getting to be about as popular as being a tax collector for the King was here back around 1774....

You have my commiseration.

Thank you for pointing out an application & response I had not considered.

Only real disagreement is re last paragraph. Image/appearance is important for lawyers. OTH, that behavior probably helps. ;-} Also CCWs are very hard to get in my PC state. Wrong kind of carrying is punished in very draconian ways. Some things are definitely not worth the cost.

John

I think that the Crunch would compliment the Wave just fine.

I love my Wave and have also thought about going that route, but I've been getting too much into my knife collecting lately to spend the money on the Crunch.
