I am by no means an expert, and probably have some of the least survival experience of the many great minds on this forum...

but...

The mighty D.R. himself has trashed many commercial kits because either:

• The items in them are sub-par (junk) and would likely break
• Some essential element is missing (no mirror, no whistle, no fire starter, etc.)

I do readily admit that different environments and different skill levels call for different kits. But even so, glaring deficiencies and poor quality are never acceptable.
