I train with slime, however for my races I typically ride tires with lighterweight tubes. I have never had a problem with flats before, however I choose a new tire this time around... it could have been the tires or it could have been just bad luck. The problems with thorn-proof strips are, first they don't work very well on road tires, they don't fit well in my race tires, they alter ride quality significantly (a big deal when on the bike for 6 hours) and they don't like high pressures.
I figure that after over 200 triathlons in my life, After my 4 on sunday I have had a grand total of 5 flats in races... the fates caught up to me sunday! I'll be going either back to the tires I have used for my last two ironmans or tubulars for Wisconsin
Thanks,
