After all the posts about 24 SAR Kits, and after playing in the North Country for a few days (post on that with pics to follow) I decided to layout, inventory, clean, restock and photograph my kit. Below are pictures and an inventory list of my 24 SAR kit… minus ALS medical gear. I recently replaced my old Arc'Teryx pack with the Camelbak BFM, the BFM is a better designed pack for SAR work and I can now use my Arc'Teryx pack for backpacking trips without unloading my SAR kit. I also just started to use an Eagle Industries Chest Pouch (CP.223) as a chest/radio harness when I broke my Conterra Radio pouch. I had the Eagle pouch for years, bought it on sale and used it to carry survival gear when hunting, I am much happier with it than the Conterra Radio pouch. I plan on replacing it with one that isn’t camouflage. Two WxTex waterproof bags are used to waterproof contents and there is more than enough room for additional clothing for colder environments. My kit is kinda on steroids, a little more loaded out than I really need, but that’s my style.

Honestly, I don't know if there is anything even remotely like SAR around where I live.

Excellent SAR pack/kit. I do have a few questions though...just curiosities
1-why 2 head lamps-you already have spare flashlights
2-why so many knives...i know we all have the usual 2 or 3, but you listed 5....is that not a lot of extra weight for SAR
3-you double up a lot on bandanas, chem lights, lenghts of paracord..etc. .
4 you also list the large personal surv kit.........which triples some of the items carried
5 being pre, as well as a hospital provider..........I would like to see your personal preferences for ALS SAR gear carried
-now here are my thoughts...........i back up you completely on your choices...., Im just as bad............probly even worse on some items, but I would like to hear your comments on the "whys" of some of your choices in gear, numbers of, and particular applications for/uses
-again, excellent work.........it gave me inspiration (once again) to re calculate my needs and update my various packs
-i , like yourself, frequently re assess my needs and constantly tweek my equipment to make it the best possible for my peronal use, i also tend to employ the -all kits link together practice.....so wether im trekking , extended backpacking, working as a nurse, or simplly running "walmart" errands....my kit can expand, as well as break down as simple as a pocket EDC up to the mother load backpacking adventure!

Good Questions! First, alot of the stuff is in the kit to give me options and I don't always carry it all.

1. I carry both headlamps since the Myo 5 remains on my helmet at all times. Sometimes, the helmet remains behind. I EDC the L1 in my pocket, it gets moved to my chest pouch so that I am sure it makes it home. The ARC "AAA" is an absoulte last resort and the Blue LED is in my notebook organizer and is also an EDC item. Yes, I could easily lose a few lights, and when I am just backpacking I typically only carry the Tactika and a Surefire, as well as the survival kit.

2. Again, the knife in the survival kit is an absolute last resort. I EDC the CRKT (or a similar knife) and it remains in my pocket. Both are very useful but with the other's I can do without. The Wave is an EDC item and already on my belt, the SAK is there in case I forget my Wave. I have been thinking about losing the Air Ranger in the survival kit and replacing it with the SAK, but haven't yet. The KaBar is a down and dirty work knife, but is the first to get left home. I like to have a minimium of 3 knifes, one fixed or locking blade knife, one multi-tool and one backup in the survival kit.

3a. Paracord, I have a bunch so that I can use it for utility work and still have some for an emergecy. I could probably carry less.

3b. Chem lights are ncie to mark turns and LZs at night, 6 is a small amount for me <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

3c. I don't have that many bandages with me, some basic stuff and the GSW kit (Bloodstopper and TraumaDex) I carry a little more with my ALS gear, and I will happily photograph it this weekend!

Now, the Survival Kit doubles and triples alot of what I already carry. This kit is a grab and go fast if needed. I do not use this kit (except when training) for routine opertaions, if I break into my Survival KIt there is a problem and I am probably in trouble <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Standard HX482UT, nice but not my preferance. I would like to convert our team over to bendix kings like we use for wildland, but that is a money issue.

Serious cool looking packs. I like the idea of using a chest rig for your emergency stuff, I've got an old butt pack I could do that with. (I've got a shelf to keep it in place, at least for the first few weeks. :P )

The one thing I'm not familiar with is the H.E.E.D. product. Is this an electrolyte powder?

What I didn't see was something to use as a pot with the jetboil. Do they come with one? If not, let me suggest an empty soup can. They fit around the base of the 500mL Nalgenes almost perfectly and hold about 10 ounces of fluid. For a handle, a piece of coat hanger wire and a small binder clip, after you drill a pair of holes in the side of the can.
