Nice little kit ya got there. Somebody obviously read 98 Degrees. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Moras are so great for this purpose because they are so light weight. You did a nice job packing that up nice and pretty too.

Can you swing it around and smack it in to a few things, drop it, drag on the ground etc without it coming unravelled? Can you get to all your gear with one hand out of commission? If not then I would make it as such, and I don't think it would take much to make it so, if necessary.

Oh ya... also... is it waterproof?

I would add another firestarter too. Something very small like the ferrocerium rod removed from a Doans MFS... but that's just me. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Trusbx, I have dunked my Photon a few times, and you can just open it up, blow it out and it is good as new. So don't worry too much about that.

You know, I'm about half way through his book, and I'm not a huge fan of this idea. I don't like the idea of hanging a hard object around my neck so when I fall all of the impact is compressed into a small space on my chest. I like even less the idea of dangling a fixed blade knife around my neck. I'm sure there are safety features and whatnot, but should that come loose in impact or other adventures (and maybe I'm not aware) that's a rather large liability.

I like the idea of carrying kit and making sure it's accessible, hence my attraction to this site, but I gotta say, I'm not in agreement with either the versatility or the safety of this particular choice of carry.

Could you let us know how it works for "flopping" around during carry, if that big bump is as uncomfortable as it looks, if you've fallen on it how did your chest take the impact, etc. I'm looking for real-world performance of that minikit and any detractors.

And just for way of reason, I have a friend who slid into homeplate and accidentally landed on the ball. It ended up pushing his liver back into his spine, tearing the liver in two pieces and causing massive internal bleeding. I'm not saying this would do that, but I don't think I'm wearing anything against my chest that won't spread the impact a bit.

I agree that carrying this thing about your neck can have some problems like impact injury, knife coming loose, stangulation, chafed skin etc.
I have not tried carrying it abou the neck mainly because of these concerns. I have adapted it with a longer necklanyard to be cross-slung, rather than be a straight neck carry per se.

As to the knife coming loose, the mora sheath is quite snug, and a ranger band holds the handle down to the sheath.

Good suggestion on testing the integrity of the thing.
1. Drag on floor
2. Smash on rock
3. Soak in water.
4. Drop from height.

Will test and see.....

The butane lighter and tinder are enclosed in a small ziploc and taped to the sheath. We'll see how waterproof it is when i dunk it in a pail of water....
The 'waterproofed' photon should be okay. Maybe I should press n seal the butane lighter too.......hmmm.
