I'll be taking my updated Standard First Aid / CPR A course (16 hrs) in a couple of weeks. I would have prefered the CPR C course (20 hrs) but this is the course they were offering at work (for free :-)

I'm also signed up (at my own expense) for a Wilderness First Aid course (40 hrs) because I do a fair bit of camping. To participate in a WFA course you need to have the First Aid. Beyond that there is Wilderness First Responder (80 hrs).

I have a nephew that just finished his EMR training - a prerequisite for his Fireman training. Eventually he will have to get his EMT-basic to becone a full fireman. Beyond that is the EMT-Advanced and EMT-Paramedic but that is more for ambulance attendants.

Just an appended note:

I was referring to St. John's Ambulance courses for the First Aid and Wilderness Medical Associates (Canada and USA) for the Wilderness courses.

Then I referred to Alberta and Saskatchewan requirements for professional first responders (firefighters, ambulance, paramedics). http://www.alis.gov.ab.ca/occinfo/Conten...PRO_ID=71002997

A 1.5-2 hr course is the equivlent of "Lifesaver" the most basic of courses. The minimum effective FA course is 16 hours.
