Got a Camelbak Motherlode to test out as my emergency pack. Can't seem to get it to fit on my waist, the thing seems to want to accomodate guys with size 38" or somethin'. I'm 28". Lots of extra belt space...help! Am I stuck?

Doughnuts for the waistline and kinfe for the belt length. You might also want a sewing machine after you use the knife. But seriously you are already not surviving if you are over 5' and have a 28" waistline! Start working out and put on some weight.

Skunk, lots of ski and backpacking shops ( try Ski Chalet) offer repair services. There is also a gear customizer listed in Doug's retail list. I would suggest loading it with the gear you intend to carry during adjustments. Don't feel bad: I wear a 34x40 jeans ( extra long so they don't climb up my leg on horseback.) I was informed at several places " nobody wears that size! " This nobody took his nowhere $$$$ to a place that sold to nobodies ;O)

maybe you should check out a different camelbak...

I prefer these... particularly the MULE and the Sabre. I use both very regularly being in the military and a Norba circuit mountain biker.

http://www.camelbak.com/mil/new.cfm

Be sure to try the adjustment straps at the base of the waist belt (i.e. the straps located on the waist belt where it attaches to the bag). These seem to make the pack hug into the small of my back when they're tightened. Failing that, sell me your Mother Load real cheap and get a different model for yourself.
Good tips Chris, but at least for me, its extrememly disappointing to pay top dollar for a piece of gear that "should" work, and doesnt.

I would suggest either calling Camelback to see if there is something they would suggest (as in another model...) or take it back and use that $ to get something that "fits". Though the donut route does sound fun... ;-)
Your Camelback should fit you fine if you can figure out how to adjust the straps. Examine all the buckles carefully and if you can't figure it out take it to any camping or cycling store and ask the clerk.

I finally got it to fit by cutting off the 'belt keepers.' They kept the strap from tightening too much because after you tighten past 34" or so waist size, the keepers would start to run into the padded belt support area (does this make sense?) I just bit the bullet and cut them off, and it works great now. Lots of extra belt strap though.
