Hello Everyone!

Does someone know of a (any) high quality book (or books) on (nautical) medicine for solo-sailing or similar. There are loads of books on the wilderness medicine topic but I havent seen any good books on injuries/illness on the high sea´s. Suggestions and coments anyone? The basics should be the same for any isolated place so there might be a goldmine of written information that we have been overlooking since most survival/first aid is on land.

Stefan

Stefan, Ill have to search the popular sailing and motorboat sites. Im sure there are several. The image of the captain performing emergency appendextamies with whiskey and a sheath knife is a bit silly, but in real life you deal with a lot of Mal de Mer ( anybody who claims not to have suffered this is a Baron Munchausen), sun and seaspray ( salt) burns and lots of nasty cuts( mostly from falls.)

Thank you Beachdoc!!!

Do you by any chance own these books? Is it possible that you can direct me to the two to three top of the line books in this selection. This would greatly limit any work to get hold of these books, including saving money!

Stefan, Sweden

There is a series of medical and dental books for the layman that put things in an absolute simple manner and I would recommend this book first:

Where There Is No Doctor: A village health care handbook.
The Hesperian Foundation, Palo Alto, California
by David Werner

Both of these books are written for the non-medically trained captain to provide care for the ship's company. They tend to be somewhat dated, as they are government produced. I do not have a copy of either of these, but have read parts of both.

The Ship Captain's Medical Guide , 21st edition,
British government document, HMSO: Department of Trade.

International Medical Guide for Ships (including the ship's medical chest) 2nd edition, from the World Health Organization

I have seen several of the others in bookstores, but cannot comment on one being better than another. I would try a library or look on Amazon for reviewer's ratings.

It is difficult to find a good reference that is suitable for a lay person, as many of the things we learn as physicians are learned in the "Army way" of "see one, do one, teach one" and it is difficult to provide guidance for the amateur that will meet everyone's needs yet not be too advanced nor too elementary.

Let me know what you find!

Here´s what I found!

I have been in on the Amazon.com site and looked for theese books; It seems to me that I will try to get hold of the following books, since they seem to be of most value and up to date:
-Advanced first aid afloat, The index seems to cover everything up to sugery on yourself :)
-Where there is no doctor. Although not into sailing it falls into the wilderness med. cathegory and had good reviews.

As for my own level, im studying to become a nurse, with a personal intrest in wilderness first aid.

Stefan, Sweden
