Jeremy,Go to Doug's retailer list and key on Exploration Products up in Washington. They have excellent fishing kits and gill nets. The milspec kits are occassionaly up for auction on Ebay.I think you will be happier with the exploration kit.The military kits get pricey due to collectors. The explore unit has a better assembly .

Barry at bluelineoutfitters@hotmail.com was working on a fishing kit. Don't know if he ever completed it.

Serendipity! A fishing kit just arrived from Barry! It's a minimalist kit secured in his small plastic vial. There is a small skien of line, 6 small hooks, 3 swivels and 6 assorted weights. Add a few safety pins and a gaff hook to your PSk and your set. I'll have to test it for the fishing kit review. It looks good for it's size!

It may have been said in jest but I think this may be a serious topic for some of us who would have a hard time catching fish w/ a hand grenade.

- Exactly how effective is 10 yrds of line, a couple of bare hooks, and some split shot? -

The chance of me catching a fish in Long Island Sound with any of these kits would be slim. Unless I'm along a forgotten river where the fish are abundant and will bite anything I wouldn't want to bet my next meal on this kit.

My question is... Do I just need practice, patience, and skills or is there a more viable solution? Like a gill net or nearby pizza parlor? ;-)

Please remember where the minimalist fishing kit is, your PSK. the TRA-CON, WSI and Exploration units are very sophisticated assemblies. The minimalist kits are just a base with hard to fabricate items. Is your hook bare? Bait with flowers, fruit, insects, grubs. 30 ' of line inadequate? Of course! Use it to tie off your knots, sinkers, etc. This is your leader. That 15' of paracord has 6 inner strands. thats 90' of additional line. Yes, it can be done with skill , patience and a little luck. I will tell more in my fishing review once the salt water segment can be completed.

I agree, the monofilament is leader material only! I watched some of the Survivor Outback (I have not seen any since!) I was squirming when they were squandering their fishing line and hooks! Why use 10' of monofilament as a handline? Use 1' and twine as backing (from paracord or other). My altoids tin includes 20' 8 lb test, hooks, small weights and 30' of 30 lb test braided fishing line. This is similar in weight and strength to the paracord inner strands. For squirts and giggles, I used my altoids tin kit on a recent fishing outing. I exclusively used it's contents for fishing and water. I'm glad I pasked oven bags for water instead of condoms (the looks!). The single 1000mg vitamin C tab in my kit wrapped in generous Saran wrap came in handy. This made the iodine water much more palateable!
