This is weird... I'm following a lot of different forums about the outdoors, fishing, survival... Hardly anybody's talking about the nice SOG Seal Pup knife. I was expecting to find a lot of information about this knife.
I just bought one off eBay for fishing/wilderness and SAR usage. It sure looks nice, not too big, not too expensive, not too heavy. Feels pretty hip to be able to buy a knife that you know has been tested by the Navy Seals.
I'm kinda excited! I'll share my experiences with the Seal Pup when I get it. In the meantime, can you guys tell me more about this Seal Pup fixed blade? What's the general feeling of my fellow forum users about this specific knife?

Bee, I got a god deal on a SEAL pup and bought one. It's a decent knife, not expensive, big enough, but not too big and doesn't weigh a ton.

I have a SOG Seal Pup Elite, and think it's great. I ran across it on an ebay auction when there was only a few minutes left, put in at the last minute on a whim (can you say bid sniped), and got it for about $50.00 if I remember correctly. I've used it a lot since it arrived, and it has both held up well under the abuse, and proved itself to be a good knife. I've carved wood with it, split wood with it, cut cardboard with it, cut meat with it, cut cordage with it, used it as a striker for my Magfire and even pried a nail out with it just to see if I could and it has taken everything in stride.
I usually don't mention it in knife threads because I don't feel like reading a bunch of folks busting my chops about buying and liking a partially serrated knife.

Got one, love it, and yeah, can't find much about it on any forum.

I usually don't mention it in knife threads because I don't feel like reading a bunch of folks busting my chops about buying and liking a partially serrated knife. OK, let's get it over with. Nicodemus, you heathen!!! A serrated knife? Have you taken leave of your senses? Alright, I'll 'fess up. I've got a couple myself, some of which have served me well, and were there when I needed them. Have never had to cut a seatbelt in a true emergency, but I'd probably want a serrated knife if the situation presented itself. Dan

Funny you should mention it . I was down in Florida visiting my parents and I got to talking with my mother. My Father is truely helpless, so my mom ends up being the deckhand on their small flats boat....anyways she wanted a knife that could cut rope. I went to Western Marine, and yes I bought her one retail (along with a Ritter PSK, and AMK Rubber sheet thing, and a flashlight and 3 whistles and...well you get the idea). Ouch, $329.24 ($75 for the knife). Anyways, she loves it. Is she a professional knife critic, no. But she is 50 something and stubborn which means she doesn't like asking for help. I've seen mixed reviews. But at the end of the day...the SEALs like it, and my mom likes it, that is as good as it gets in my book.

Hi Marc!
Just received my Seal Pup... I'm kinda upset.
It's wayyy too heavy to carry during SAR operations. Even for your everyday camping, I don't see how/why I could carry such a long and heavy knife. The website says 5 oz, I didn't think it would feel that heavy.
Also, when using the knife with the kydex sheath, the knife feels even bigger on your hips.
I think I will resell it very shortly and will look for a lighter fixed-blade knife.
Recommendations, anyone? :-)

*scratches head politely*
Big? I've handled my brother's, and it didn't seem that big, but I agree, the kydex sheaths that SOG designs seem a bit bulky to me.
