I was reading about chipping problems with the RSK. Does anyone know anything about this or had chipping problems.

I EDC a mini-RSK and take a full-size RSK camping with me and NEVER have had any problems with chipping. Darn great knives.

Plus, I'm pretty sure Doug has said that Aeromedix would replace any defective knives - if they even exist at all.

I EDC a full-size S30V RSK and I haven't had any chipping problems either. I guess if you're worried about it you could order one of the new ones in M2. Either way you won't be sorry.

Mine chips all the time. These are VERY small chips though and I think it may be the result of me putting a wire edge on it (unintentionally) with the Sharpmaker. It in no way effects the function.

Forgive my lack of experience, but what is a wire edge, and how does one unintentionally put one on a knife with a Sharpmaker? I have a Sharpmaker, will be getting a mini RSK next week (to tide me over till the M2s ship <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />) and I don't like the idea of unintentionally doing anything to it!

Oh my gosh... what is a wire edge and how does one put one on a knife. So much information on this that I don't know where to begin. Obviously I'm not the best person to tell you how to get rid of it (since I myself am often plagued by it) but I will tell you this... it's nothing specific to the RSK, the Sharpmaker or to S30V steel. I guess in a nutshell the wire edge is like the burr that won't go away. For me some knives tend to be more susceptable to it getting a wire edge than others. I have some knive that never get a wire edge, some knives that sometimes get one and some knives that always get one.

Honestly, as I stated before, I'm not even sure I'm really getting a wire edge on the RSK. If I am it is a very small one, which is why I am not sure if that is what is chipping. I am far from a knife sharpening expert. I imagine someone that is far more knowledgable than me will chime in on this thread though. If not, there is a wealth of information over at BF. Plenty of knife sharpening experts over there.

I got two small but visible chips in my mini-RSK shortly after I first got it. Sharpened them out on a small EZ-Lap diamond stone and no problems since. I find the mini a great little EDC. I also like the KaBar Dozier folding hunter (also a Doug recommended knife). Incredible buy for about $25, shipping included.

Re sharpening, I've never found anything as reliable and as easy to use as the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Solves 90 percent of my sharpening dilemmas, although every once in a while I run across a knife with really obtuse edge and need a coarse diamond stone to get 'em started toward the edge I want.
