I use McCaffe because I can get it cheap through work. I've used Norton (get the Professional package, seems to be smoother with the updates). Both are quality products, but it seems they cycle between which one is better, with a year of the two being equal in between.

AVG is OK, but sometimes a little slow to get updates up.

Computer Associates is less than OK in my opinion, and I recommend avoiding that Panda thing (Staples brands it) like the plague. I've seen them both miss things that they supposedly were ready to protect against.

I too, work in IT. Instead of recommending a specific brand, I suggest that you get an AV package from any of the mentioned companies , which are all reputable, and then keep it up-to-date (weekly at a minimum, must updates seem to be published on Wednesdays). Good AV software that's not up-to-date is, IMHO, worse than no AV software at all. It lulls you into a false sense of security. And while we're at that guys, check that "other protection" and make sure it's "up-to-date" as well! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
