I had an instructor that used to do a lot of field work and monitoring for OSHA matters. This usually meant leaving very expensive equipment behind to check air quality, toxicity, etc.
His solution was to put "Danger! High Voltage!" signs on everything. Apparently that cured the vandalism and prying eyes.
