Topographic maps are great. The only down side to a topo is the reletively small area they cover. To really use a compass to its full effect, a topo is a must due to the much greater detail they provide. One thing that you may want to obtain would be a key to the topo maps you are using. These keys are usually free when you purchase a map. Sometimes the key is printed on the map.
