most bottle filter i have seen uses 2 micron carbon elements. This will remove gaidia and such, but not bacteria or virusses.

There are also version availible with a iodine resic stage, but for this stage to be really effective you need to wait a few moment before drinking. Meaning you have to squeze it in to a cup first.
