Does a in-the bottle filter ( like an Extreme) screen out everything that a pump water filter does? If so, they seem like a really good solution to fast filtering.

They are all the rage with the ultralight/endurance camping crowd.
On the steel touring bike frames I build, I include a McNett water straw in the tool kit.
On the titanium frames, I include a McNett filter bottle in one of the bottle racks.
The difference has to do with the type of person in the market for fe vs. al vs. te frame.

Some of them say they filter out protozoan parasites like Giardia and Cryptosporidium and viruses. Some say just Giardia. They have different sized filters, you you would have to be careful.

None of them seem to mention chemically-contaminated water, like mining run-off or chemical fertilizers.

most bottle filter i have seen uses 2 micron carbon elements. This will remove gaidia and such, but not bacteria or virusses.

There are also version availible with a iodine resic stage, but for this stage to be really effective you need to wait a few moment before drinking. Meaning you have to squeze it in to a cup first.

The Katadyn Exstream Purifier is a true water purifier from a biological point of view. It is effective against parasites, bacteria and viruses. You would need an additional carbon filter to remove some of the organic chemical compounds.

I use one all of the time during my trips to Ecuador, as it is easy to carry, fill and use. I generally do not worry about chemical contaminates, but if that were a concern, I have an additional filtering device with an activated charcoal component.
