Last year, I bought a full size RSK. And from then on, I have been EDCing it.
Good sturdy knife.
But it was a bit impressive for some people.
So I recently ordered a mini-RSK, in order to improve my "public relations"
When I received it, I thought : "how cute..." !!
It now replaces its big brother in my rear pants pocket. And besides being "cute" it seems to be a tough little guy, as sturdy as the big one.
Now ..... where did I record the link to the convex grind procedure/URL ....????

Thanks, Joegreen !
Now, I only have to find such 2000 grit paper.... Mouse pads, I have a lot of ... Then I no longer get any excuse not to try this apparently simple procedure, first on an older knife and then on my RSK. And all my knives - at least, all the ones I really use. I will not touch those which stay in the display cabinet.

Does anyone know if the grit paper's rating/index is the same all over the world ? Or are there differences between the rating used in the US and Europe, for instance ? (like for temperatures : ?C and ?F)
2000 seems a large number for me... I have not much experience in this field and numbers in th 800-1000 range seem more likely to be found here in France. Or should I go to an car parts/accessories shop and ask for 2000 grit paper ??

I don't know the exact answer to your question, but this may help. I just looked at a product I have and I don't know if the term "micro mesh" is a brand name or the general name for the product. This product is used in wood working and I've seen it at wood working stores and I've also heard of violin makers using it. Someone told me once that when a bird flies into the windshield of an F-16, they use micro mesh to polish the resulting scratches out.
I (and other classical guitarists) use it to put a glass like finish on fingernails for playing.
Anyway, the point is, the roughest grit that I have in my fingernail kit is 2400. The finest is 12000.
I don't know if it will work for the procedure, but you may want to check into it.
Isn't it sad that a three inch knife blade makes some people nervous?

I was finding 2000 too large a number and you now speak of 12000 grit rating ...
Well, I will have to check in some shops and see what I find.
About the RSK : I guess it's more the fact the blade is quite wide, if not very long, that disturb some people. Anyway you look at it, it's quite an impressive bit of steel ....
OTOh, what would those people say if I was to draw my Emerson Commander out of my pocket .....!!!???!!!!.....

The micro mesh is more of a cloth like consistency instead of a paper like consistency. I think I had to order mine from the internet, because no stores around here sell it. I'm not too knowledgable about it, but I think that 2000 is a very fine grit for sand paper, but not micro mesh
Yeah, people would get nervous when all of a sudden, my Commander, with the scary looking black blade was out of my pocket and open I stopped carrying it because the overall length of the knife with the blade open is one quarter of an inch longer than the legal limit where I live.
I've never been able to get a sharp edge on mine, and I'm seriously considering selling it. Have you had any luck with sharpening it? Granted, I don't have a lot of experience sharpening, but even with a Spyderco Sharpmaker, no luck I'd like to try putting a convex edge on my RSK M2 (when it arrives) but I'm afraid I'll mess it up and ruin it

When I get to take my Commander out of the display cabinet, it's for hiking. It then goes in a back pocket, availaible if needed for a fast deployment. But I never used it for camp duties ! I pack other knives, more suitable for that..
So I have not had to sharpen the blade of the Commander : it's brand new !! But I have to admit Im not sure how I will do it, if/when needed... I just noted the blade is not a real V : one "side" of the V is shorter than the other "side", it's more like a chisel

Hi Frenchy,
How do you do? To find the very fine paper you need: check out the car part sellers. They have very fine sandpaper for body repairs (carrosserie). I don't know if the European system differs from any other. I guess US measurements are grits per square inch while european measures are grits per square cm? Somebody fill us in on that.
Anyway you will not find anything finer than 1200 or 1600 grit in European shops easily. To be honest, that's REALLY fine paper. To the touch you it almost feels like those thick drawing papers we used at school.
Good luck sharpening the RSK
Greetz
