Today something interesting appeared in our newspaper : The "Lifestraw"

Athough the concept of a filtering straw is not new, this seems to be promising for a BOB:

reliable, cheap, simple, long lasting. You can supply one for every family member.

The product is being developped for third world countries. As a result it is simple and

cheap. It should (accourding to the newspaper article) cost 2.5 to 3 USD a piece. It can

filter max. 150 ml a minute. It should last for a year or 700 liters of water.
Other models with gravity feed wil be developped.
? shelf life?
Distribution should start 03/2006 (to third world countries, possibly not available for sale to individuals at startoff).

Pros:
- cheap
- long life
- simple, low tech
- 99.999% filtering

Cons
- not yet available.
- limitation max. 150 ml/min.
- only for "direct drinking" (other versions under development)
- not filtering

I have not connection with the developpers or firm.
Might be interesting for some people?

Thanks to ETS and its members for the very interesting forum.
I learned a lot!

hmm... Doesn't look like really new technology. Pre-mac already makes filters which uses carbon and iodine resin as active Ingredient. Both pump and gravity types.

iodine-based resin usually need time to react with the water to make it effective. So i wonder how the fixed that problem. Also the indicated it can be used for childeren, but iodine based product usually are not recommend for children.
