nothing really special, i see them on the road occasionally. But the model that can fit 2 small kids seems to be slightly more populair. I have sold those thing for my job, but never used one.

The word "Community" appears in this article 13 times, if you include the title graphic. That always sort of raises my eyebrows since, in my experience, people who belabor this term do so with a very specific sort of community in mind, in which everyone shares their beliefs and lifestyles.

If they're so cheap to build, why appeal to civil authority to foot the bill? Can't the commune, erm, I mean community , sell organic manure to cover the costs, or something?

College towns tend to be like that. Deal with it.

Some communities (esp in college towns, it seems) provide bicycles that people can rent or use. This may be what they have in mind.

OTOH, what does it matter? If you don't like the concept, just hit your BACK button.

I don't know why they go to the trouble to build it out of couduit, it looks like one of those trash carts that holds two trash cans to wheel down to the curb from the house. Why not just buy one of those and put larger wheels on it if necessary?

By dealing with it, do mean don’t criticize it or comment on it? Please forgive me, but I was under the impression that the point of linking to things or broaching topics on discussion boards was to promote reasoned discussion.

I don’t see anything specifically about college towns in the article, not that it matters, nor do I have any doubt about what they have in mind, since they put it directly on their site: bike-lifestyle based political activism. I’m not criticizing the idea, I’m criticizing the fact that they want the public to fund their activism. I wouldn’t be on board with that if they wanted the gummint to pay for “Gizmo for Prez” signs.

I think this project might be the one to watch, since they’re also trying to build a shelter component in to it.

I was thinking about getting a YAK, but they're expensive, and the site you linked gives me the notion that I may be able to put something together myself for $200 cheaper.

well i couldn't find a price tag for such a thing on the website, but i'm pretty sure a cargo model is sold for about 50 euro and the child carring version about 80 euros.

I think that this is pretty cool personally. My bestest buddy and I are planning an adventure that requires us to hike or bike into an area that has some very cool historical interest to us. If we bike - it will take us less time to get there, however, we would not be able to carry much more then a day pack each. If we hike - more travel time but able to carry everything. I might try to build one of these carts and see how it does.

I figure I have all but the conduit in my garage and worst that could happen is that I waste a day in my life by trying something new. At best I will look like a yuppy suvivalist geek that borrowed his neighbors bike kid carrier and got lost in the mountains.

I will let you know how it works out for me. Provided that I dont get laughed off the mountain by ranchers with a meth problem.

This has me thinking of adapting some of these ideas to make it easier to transport various small items around the airport.

Always something to learn regardless of the source.

Why not just buy a kid trailer -- pre made, known workability and good weight/ space.

The Yak is very cool but also a very expensive option. I like the idea of building my own or modifying a garage sale bought kid trailer.

True. I mean you can pick up a half decent bike for the cost of a YAK.

I do like the idea of 1 wheel versus 2 though.
