Good idea, although I'm always sceptical of "all in one" items, SAKs not withstanding. It might just be a bad picture, but the knife doesn't look to be very good quality, and at that price it probably isn't. I personally don't know anything about the quality of the Firesteel.

It's a handy looking combination of blade, flint, and a whistle, but at that price, I'd question the quality until I could get my hands on one. But then again, at that price, it's probably worth checking out, I've spent money in worse ways <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

IIRC, that Toologic gadget has been around for sometime...

I never had one in my hands, so I can't speak about its quality.
It sure is a handy way to -basically - cover two important needs.

The ToolLogic knife isn't really too bad. I'm not a big fan of the steel type used, but it's functional. The ferro rod is a premium Light-My-Fire and it works very well...

I was given one as a gift, except mine had an LED light instead of a fire steel. The blade was poor quality and the lock would not take any abuse of any type. The whistle is not very loud, and the LED light usually did not work. I "re-gifted" it to someone who thought it was "way cool". There is just too much quality kit out there to depend upon something like this. YMMV.

Hmm, it looks like a neat backup tool, but not a primary EDC. I think the ad boys got the description wrong, as I don't see the magnesium alloy (they were probably erroneously referring to the ferrocerium rod insert). That they cut the cutting edge of the blade to use as the rod scraper will improve the efficiency of the sparking, but will wear on the blade at a potentially bad stress point. I would use it sparingly, preferring to keep it as a back up in case I am without one of my primary tools or some such. I agree it would make good barter.

I wouldn't buy/carry it.
Too heavy for what it does.
Poor quality leaves you with warranty/both pieces rather than fire/knife
Chance of self injury increased due to poor ergonomics/quality
Although I will agree that for most "North American Cube Dwellers" it would be more than enough tool for any survival situation they are likley to encounter.

I have lots of multi tools for various purposes (bike multi tools a-plenty) and they are all equally good at nothing. Unless you consider the poor quality tools ability to garf up whatever you happen to be "fixing" with it when it breaks or "lets go"...

I have carried one for a few years now in my cargo pocket organizer. It is a backup to my normal heavy duty EDC items. It is a compromise, but if its the only thing you can carry, its not bad. The main reason I purchased it was for the metal presentation box it came in. That is what my main EDC is kept in. It is 1 X 3.25 X 5.25 inches and has a removable lid. It is always with me. Not all ToolLogic items come in presentation boxes. They once in awhile can be found on sale at outdoor stores. I would like to find a few more boxes of that size.
