A desalinator doesn't need to be big or gas/electric powered, Doug's already mentioned the 06, and do a search for the "waterlog watermaker", it's not a matter of size, but of the time/effort put in as to whether it's worth it in a hiking situation, not to mention the cost. I will say though, that a "waterlog" is going to be "must have" gear on my next boat <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I read on a survival site somewhere, if you dig 50' in from the shore, the land has desalinated for you. I have no experience in the matter. I'm sure there are some caveats. Good luck.
