gas lighers are a Bad Idea for a survival situation. You want something water-proof, needs no battery, needs no special handling.

I had one that I kept on my key-ring for about a year. I sent it back before Christmas when the lighter failed. The retailer sent it back to Victorinox, who just issued a refund. Apparently they've been discontinued due to quality issues with the lighters.

It was a nice idea for me, as it was a UK-legal EDC with a lighter, pen and all the other stuff in a fairly compact package. (I know that the butane lighter isn't a complete survival solution.) However, the lighter was never that good, even before it failed. It would often take several attempts to light, which is much worse than my Blazer.

You can still see a few on sale, but due to the lighter issues, I wouldn't recommend it.

I now EDC my Victorinox Handyman on my keyring instead. Annoyingly it doesn't have a pen :-(

Was a lighter jet like u would see on Windmill or more of the Bic flame?

It was a blue jet/blow-torch type lighter.

I sold a few of those and there was a big number of new SAKs that had malfunctioning lighters or at least not very trustworthy ones. This is something that is totally unlike Victorinox, whose quality control is excellent (specially considering the huge production numbers).

I wouldn't recommend these knives for a survival kit. You're better off with a regular SAK and a bunch of Bic Lighters, water/windproof matches and a firesteel. You'll save some money, too. Those Campflames/Swissflames aren't cheap!

Was there an altiutude included in their equation? I know that some of jet flame zippo inserts were failing since they worked perfect in 0 ft over the sea level but for anyone else @ 5000 ft they were failing.

I think that the SAK wasn't designed for higher altitudes (not much in the way of flame adjustment).

However, mine didn't work well even at sea level.

Bummer since it would be a perfect edc blade... Now if they made it work and implemented LED light on the other end. With locking blade... I go and dream more...
