I have just discovered that a heavy alum foil bag that the designer coffees come in make a nice cooking pot, also you can boil water in it . It can be folded and placed in a small kit.

Now I just have to find someone who drinks coffee to save some for me.

Great idea, now I'll have to find a robust coffee plunger to pack in my BOB to drink the coffee before I can cook my meal <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Being yet another of our non-coffee drinkers, I've never noticed those before. Any brands in particular I should keep an eye out for?

And since none of the others noticed this was you first post, welcome.

Ditto here Ironraven... I'd like a link to one that's been used successfully. I'm a bit afraid of any toxic chemicals if you were to put a plastic coated one directly in fire - though the hot-rock method may be safer. Cool idea.

Now that the idea has soaked for a while, has anybody done this successfully?

Most of the coffee bags I am familiar with are made from laminated films....polyester/foil/polyester/polyethylene. The foil is very thin and supported by the polyester layers, the polyethylene forms the seals...and has a fairly low melting point.

I cannot imagine these holding up in a fire....boiling food in the bag maybe but not as a cook pot exposed to direct flame.

There must be some sort of coffee package that I have not seen.

Great Idea, Al! Perhaps the pouch could be trimmed and folded to the point where it carries flat in your pocket behind a altoids or similar PSK. You could steam, cook, drink, or store things in such a pouch. Very handy! Exhaust manifold cooking comes to mind (so much more difficult with newer cars)... Coffee bag/exhaust manifold rabbit stew, anyone?

Can you tell us more details. Ex: brand of coffee, where did you buy it, size of bag (or ounces). Thanks for the idea.
