Hello everyone! This is my first post to this forum.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a place on the net where one could enter a ZIP code or a location, and then receive information on all the possible natural disasters that have occured in that area in the past and/or are predicted to occur there in the future?
Thanks very much for the input
alex

http://www.esri.com/hazards/makemap.html gives disaster specific maps by city. If you do a general search for hazard maps you will find numerous additional resources.

One of my daily reviews is the USGS Recent Earthquakes in US . A little drilling down will provide you with the Earthquake Probability & Hazard maps as well as Earthquake Preparedness links.

Also check with your local State, County, & sometimes City EMA which can provide you with additional information as to hazards in your area.

Now to go check out the link that Chris listed.

The government was listening and the White House issued plans for earthquake, volcano and tsunami warning system. Additionally, you can reduce your risk of tsunamis and receive NOAA alerts to that incoming wave.

I've got to get to bed - heading to the in-laws in 6 hours. Have to update my PSK so that I can survive the day. <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Have you seen the program called QuakeSaver
I have it running on one of the computers at work. I think you would like it.

'drilling down' <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> A central taboo in many primal people's mythos is that digging into the earth and taking things releases evil; goldminers in the Amazon polluting that mighty river with mercury, Congressmen who want to drill ANWAR, Dwarves in Middle Earth......

Drilling in ANWAR should begin immediately! At best, they say it will take ten years to get the oil flowing. Who knows though, in ten years we may not be as dependent on oil as we are today but it should begin.......NOW! A friend of mine that lived in Alaska for years says that the elk or mooses or reindeer or whatever lives there, never EVER go that far North in the first place. I was told that laying a paper plate on a football field would give you some idea of how little of the land would be used, the football field being the total acreage of Anwar. Seems like a small price to pay for the benefits derived from the drilling.

Actually, I don't think we should, yet, but probably not for the reason you think.

America has a bunch of energy sources, just none that are either economically or politically cheap enough to use. Yet. Coal, oil, natural gas, oil shale, etc. It's all there, just too expensive when easy oil is readily available.

Think of all that as our retirement plan. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Let's run the rest of the world out of oil, then sell our slightly dirtyier, slightly harder to extract energy back to them at 2x what we paid for theirs. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If we start drilling now, we'd be tempted to use it too soon for this to work. When do we do it? When either the middle east is buying oil from somewhere else, or have switched over to something other than oil (completely). Till then, bank it.

FEMA has lists of all current and past major disasters & emergencies by state (at least back to 1950s). See the "Active Disasters & Emergencies" map toward the bottom of the home page.

FEMA also has free online flood zone maps.

I've never been to ANWAR myself, but the federal employees who work there have published maps of various animal studies, which you and your friend may find interesting. This is a map of calving sites of one species of caribou:
