This may be quite OT to Preparedness and Survival in itself. (We can not yet Drill thru the Earth!, -see what follows.). But I think its a perfectly Fine Topic of Conversation around a Campfire!

It stems from and relates to, -the various discussions we've had lately, -about where we are on the ETS map.

So if you were to poke a long needle directly thru the center of your globe, coming in vertical above the location on the Planet in which you live, -Where on the *Other and Opposite* side of our World, (the Antipodal Point), -would such needle emerge?!

This is of course not the classic ole "Digging a Hole to China". My location and China's, (I'm at the same latitude North as Beijing / Peking), -are both in the Northern Hemisphere. It thus would be Impossible to dig a hole thru the Earth's Center, -to reach it. Even though it is quite nearly on the other side of the World, from me. As such it is Impossible for any location within China, -to be at my particular Antipodal Point.

I'm right about at 40 and a half degrees North Latitude. (As well as 80 degrees West Longitude, -on the western edge of our Downtown.

Therefore, I must go 40 degrees SOUTH Latitude, and 180 degrees of Longitude either East or West of myself, -in order to be at my own particular Antipodal Point, -off on the other side of the World.

Such a needle poke, -directly above Pittsburg, -vertically to and thru the Centre of the Earth, -to continue thru till it comes out at last on the other side of the Planet, -at *my* Antipodal Point, would...

...Pop back out somewhere on the Seafloor of an obscure corner of the already rather obscure, Indian Ocean! some 600 or so miles, give ot take 100 or so, Southwest (not exactly) of Perth, Australia. This is my personal Antipodal Point!

After coming down from Space, thru our Upper Atmosphere, thru our Lower one, to and thru the ground at my feet, thru some 4,000 miles of interior Planetary Rock, -to and past the Earth's very Center, -thru another 4,000 miles of the same, -it suddenly pops up thru the sediments and muck, on the Indian Ocean Seafloor. On up thru another average two miles or so of Cold, mostly High Pressure Seawater, -it again meets the Oceanic Surface, to rise once again thru our Atmosphere. This is *my* own personal Antipodal Point!

Where and What may be your's?!

Either imagine such a Needle Pokethru, -from where you are. Or just find your very *Opposites* of your actual Latitude and Longitude, -then look on a map or globe for such, -and Bingo Voila!, -that is *your* own personal Antipodal Point!

Check it out! See where in the World *your's* may be!!!

(I've also checked this out for some other prominent World locations. London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Rome, Jerusalem, etc. To no surprise, -they often come out to some quite obscure and non-descript of world locations, as well. Antipodally speaking, that is. Jerusalem, for example, comes out at an obscure, edge area of the Polynesian Pacific archipelago. Nothing spectacular there! Despite its so prominent of a starting point. London of course gives New Zealand's Antipodes Islands, their very name! Though not exactly on London's Antipodal Point, -they are rather close.)

(Along these same lines, -I like to look at a "Transparent Globe" every chance I get. To visually see and know the relationships and placement of the World's Continents and Oceans on a Sphere as they really are! For on a typical *Non*-Transparent Globe, -you have to do some "Brainwork of Imagination" to guage this out! One side of your globe in itself, visually blocks out the other! Dratts!). "As to the fable that there are Antipodes, that is to say, men on the opposite side of the earth, where the sun rises when it sets on us, men who walk with their feet opposite ours, there is no reason for believing it. Those who affirm it do not claim to possess any actual information; they merely conjecture that, since the earth is suspended within the concavity of the heavens, and there is as much room on the one side of it as on the other, therefore the part which is beneath cannot be void of human inhabitants. They fail to notice that, even should it be believed or demonstrated that the world is round or spherical in form, it does not follow that the part of the earth opposite to us is not completely covered with water, or that any conjectured dry land there should be inhabited by men. For Scripture, which confirms the truth of its historical statements by the accomplishment of its prophecies, teaches not falsehood; and it is too absurd to say that some men might have set sail from this side and, traversing the immense expanse of ocean, have propagated there a race of human beings descended from that one first man." - St. Augustine

I'm at 58* 21' N, 134* 35 W, so my antipodal point would be around 58 S, where there is essentially no land at all. It's South of Madegascar (WAY South), and around 10 or so degrees North of Enderby Land in Antarctica.

Since the earth's surface is roughly 3/4 water, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that any randomly chosen point on it is quite likely to be miles deep in H2O. That points out the importance of being prepared to survive adrift, so maybe this whole thread isn't totally off-topic after all!

You must just have a little bit too much time on your hands today. It is not even a full moon yet.

I'd rather be at a solar lagrange point- I'll survive just as long, and I like the stars better then the dark of the ocean floor. :P

You know, everytime I drive down to Malibu I manage to bump into Shirley McClain who I helped evacuate during the fires. Shirley always asks how my chakras are lining up with that marvelous smile. Now I have to determine my Antiwhat? I'm going to contemplate the lint in my omphalos now and see if it's a usable tinder.
