From an amazon.com flyer received in the mail, I saw the SwissBit Swiss Army Knife 512MB USB.
Specs
- Detachable USB 2.0 Flash Drive (128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1.0GB) (Amazon says it comes with a USB cable, no mention in spec sheet)
- Blade
- File/Flat Head Screwdriver
- Scissors
- Ballpoint pen
- White LED light (1.0GB version only)

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but the first time I saw one of those I laughed my backside off thinking about what kind of actual use the knife portion of that thing will actually get. Perhaps it would be something like getting the grit out from underneath a fingernail or something. My reasoning being that if I have to do any real work with the knife that could potentially damage the drive I'm going to remove the drive, and at that point it was a nice nifty (albeit stylish) gimmick for storing it for a while, but a whole lot of wasted space where better tools could have been now.

Granted the other tools are a nail file, and ball point pen so it's definitely geared toward a certain crowd, but not of much use for me.

I'd just get a seperate Flash drive and a nice Victorinox knife and probably save some money to boot.

That's just my take though. I could be wrong. <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

There has been talk on here about saving critical personal information and carrying it with you. At least with this you have some limited cutting, prying, writing and light source. Nice idea, but could be beefed up. $110 for the cost of the 1.0GB version, like you said, is probably better spent on seperate tools, like a multi-tool, USB flash drive and and those little pen lights with the thumb button. They're mentioned on here all the time, I just can't think of the name.

As for the USB flashdrive, there is no mention on whether you can reorder it if it ever fails. I had purchased a NOMAD MUVO 128 (albeit 2 years ago), and within 6 months, it didn't work anymore. So, kind of distrusting of my USB flash drivers and SD cards.

I picked up the 512 MB version at CompUSA a few weeks ago. After rebates it was $30.00.

The knife blade isn't much but the light is handy and a few days ago I was wanting to write something down but didn't have my pen. I realized that I had my new knife attached to my keychain so I was able to write away.

It's not perfect but if the price is good it's a nice little thing to carry.

We have these at our local Target for about $50.

They have the little Swiss Tech pliers and screwdrivers.

Thoughts?

One thing to think about. I used to carry a Midnite MiniChamp II instead of a Classic. I switched back to the Classic because I found that the thickness of the MMC2 made it unconfortable to carry in my pocket, the casing was somewhat less robust (because it contains a battery, etc.), and it didn't have the tweezers and toothpick.

I do miss the light and pen, though. The Swissbit models are 19mm thick and 19mm wide. Definitely too thick to carry in my pocket comfortably. I do like it, though, and I'll probably get one to stash in my bag rather than my pocket. The Classic is better for that. I wonder how waterproof the memory drive is, though.

I've dunked my SanDisk Micro (in a glass of wine, long story), and it still works fine.
