Not sure if this is new to anyone but myself. but the other day i was doing my usual walmart hunt for junk and ended up in the arts & crafty section . i found these flat heavy plastic cards that are used to spool needle point thread on. shaped like a fat letter I . 50 for $1.49 . i spooled almost 50 ft of spider wire on one and they fit perfectly in my little altoid tin fishing kit. the one with the sliding top. anyone else ever use these things ..there great!!

I use a similar device I found in a sewing basket. It is a long U shaped piece of plastic with a slotted top to hold the yarn/thread in place. Works great.

I have wound both along the long axis and around the device with 3 different threads (plus some vest repair wool). The needles tuck under and are secure.

This is part of my vest carried repair kit.

Ironraven,

If you have the book "Build the Perfect Survival Kit", look at page 47. The top right item in the photo shows the floss bobbin with 100' of 12 lb. Spider Wire wound on it.

Nifty looking, but what do you call it?

I do not know what that red plastic bobbin is actually called as I "borrowed" if out of my wifes sewing box.

I think it is meant for knitters who use many colors of yarn at once....I bet a speciality yarn store would have these or something similar.

These are perfect....but I only stol...um...."borrowed" one. <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

I have used small SS bobbins for a sewing machine. WalMart for a buck or less each. You can also get plastic IIRC.

Use your drill, build up a drill bit with tape until the bobbin sticks on the bit. Use that to wind your cord or line on tightly.

I have a little system that I put in my go-bag for carrying fishing line:

I cut a pencil down to a length just a tiny bit shorter than a film cannister. Then I epoxied it to the center of the inside of the lid, and further epoxied a little plastic plate onto the other end of the pencil, thus making a spool with a pencil for the spindle. I would it up with 10# fishing line until it would just barely fit back into the film cannister. It's a sort of self-contained system as the spool snaps right into the cannister, and there's always the pencil in there if I absolutely need a writing utensil.

If this isn't a clear description let me know; I could take pictures but it's so simple once you see it there really is no need for a complex set of instructions.

That is a good, multi use idea.
