LONG K&M Matchcase….designed for REI StormProof match carry.

(Standard length Red pictured with clear aluminum REI length case)

Keith just sent me a prototype matchcase designed for the REI StormProof match. These are not currently offered for sale but I would like to gather a list of interested parties that may want one. If the demand is reasonable Keith will make a batch.

He will have to build a couple of special tools to build them efficiently and check with the anodizer to see how they'll work on their fixtures.

If these look promising Keith will make them. No details on color yet, but they will all be aluminum to start.

These hold 15 REI matches (head up/head down) and the one of their extra striker pads....note you must carry a striker pad for these matches.

These will be offered at $21 each with the same shipping details as the original length cases...K&M Thread

What I would like is to gather a list of interested parties in this thread.

So if you think you may be interested please reply to this thread with a number you may want. I will keep a tally and let you know when these are available….this is an interest list only NOT a commitment to buy…so please do not contact me about purchase until Keith has actually made them and I have offered them.

Thanks

BTW...2--CR123A lithium batteries will fit with a bit of insulation material on each end.. as this is a great conductor.....I highly discourage this.

Excellent!

Put the batteries in opposed; one with + up, the other with + down. This is same as the old trick used to prevent batteries stored in a flashlight from discharging inadvertantly if the light is accidently switched on.

Wow! Thanks for the responses. The list has grown fast.

Bright orange powdercoated cases in either standard length or the REI length will NOT be offered. The powdercoated cases were too troublesome for Keith, so only anodized colors will be offered.

Because Keith uses an aircraft aluminum alloy for his cases he cannot get super bright anodized colors. The muted red is an example of what sort of colors are possible.

I have been pushing for a hunter green for these REI cases, Keith may do a clear anodized, or we may be able to get some sort of other anodized color. Right now no word....I guess it will be a surprise.

Overnight on 3 forums I have approximately 28 cases requested. I am not certain how many more I will need for Keith to do the machine setup, produce a batch and get the anodizing done. But I will keep you informed.

Now as to that great knife....

That is a Iisakki Järvenpää 1244, made in Kauhava, Finland. It has a handle of birchbark rings. I just got this about a couple of weeks ago and it is very very nice. The spine of this has a sort of scraper edge which will toss sparks from that Swedish firesteel in amazing quantity. I bought it from a friend in Canada who has a site here:

http://home.cogeco.ca/~adude/IJO.htm

For $70 US, this is about my favorite knife. The grip is just very pleasing and the grind is super for this sort of price.

This fellow made me a pair of custom canoe paddles last year and is a great fellow to deal with.

Having just bought five (5) of these I'm very happy with them.

I did ask at the time if a long version existed for CR123A cells.

Put me down for a few. I wonder if the illuminious dials on the compasses would be available as well for this batch? I can imagine these would be hard to source.

This one will fit the CR123A's with just a bit of rattle room.

The luminous compass has not yet made it into Keith's hands. I have one of the Suunto luminous ones and it is good....not a tritium compass however.

I am not certain when these may be available as Keith has to buy a large quantity of them at one time.

Looks interesting. I'd pony up for one, STSA (Subject to Spousal Approval)

Now, with the questions..... How long are they, overall? What kind of compass? (still a SUNTO?) Inner dimensions for the case (clear diameter, clear length)

.....CLIFF

I got word from Keith this morning. He is going to set up and start making these. They should be ready for shipment in about 4 weeks....but I will let you know. No word as to the color, but that will come in his discussions with the anodizer.

These will have exactly the same Suunto jeweled compass as the standard cases. I will have to go out to the car to get my case to do some other dimensions, but measuring the whole case this is what I have:

Standard case is 95mm long including the little lanyard device on the bottom.

Long case is 110mm long also including the lanyard device.

Diameter is the same as the standard cases.

I would like one! I like the red or yellow. Just wish he could do the blaze orange!

Any way to coat the bottom of the cap with the striking material for REI matches?

Well Blaze orange is definately out. Keith will not do powdercoated cases again.

As to the striker on the inside of the cap...that would not be safe and probably not practical for Keith to apply.

REI supplies an nice auxillary striker that rides in the case with the striker surface against the wall, since these wear out the inside surface of cap coating would also not be good forever.

Hi Schwert

Should the Luminious dials become availble in the future ( no pressure to state a time) could they be retro fitted into the presently availble matchcases?

I can't see this being to great a problem and a possible upgrade......almost like microsoft <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Keith may get some luminous compasses sometime and it would be possible to retrofit the compass. I cannot say when this may happen if ever, but I will let you know.

We definately have enough interest for Keith to proceed with this design. As I have said before there will probably only be one color as the anodizer works and charges by the batch.

I will probably open this up for confirmed orders next week, with the understanding that shipment is about a month away.

Thanks for all your interest and additional ideas. Over time I hope Keith can work on many of the offshoots of these cases.

Everyone is talking about the caps with the compass. Any chace of some solid caps? Maybe with the surface roughed up a little?

The inside of the plug is already roughened as a striker for strike-anywheres.

As to compassless plugs, that is something Keith has not wanted to do.....yet.

I just got off the phone with Keith. He is working on the long cases and it looks like the first batch is going to be clear anodized...that is a silver color case.

These will not be ready for a couple of weeks, and when they go to the anodizer I will post that we are ready to take orders.

I have had a few folks trying to order...which I appreciate, but I would prefer to not start transfering money until the cases are just about ready.

Thanks for all your interest and watch for an update soon.

Keith just sent off the Long cases to the anodizer and expects them back next week.

We are ready to start taking orders for the longs and of course any standard cases you want.

Long REI cases in clear anodized (silver) only, Standard cases in red, black or clear anodized aluminum, and brass.

Prices for the REI long is $21, standards are $19 each. Postage is $4 in the US and $5 for international addresses for up to 5 cases.

I am taking next week off, but will be checking the email address for orders. There will potentially be a couple of extra days during this process.

Thanks for your early requests to order and I look forward to any new orders you place.

Please send your requests to

rlschaffer@gmail.com

I will tally your totals and then ask for a paypal transfer.

Thanks,
Randy

I have returned from my nice long holiday. I tried to keep up with orders while I was relaxing but was a tad slow.

I have not heard from Keith if these long cases have returned from the anodizer but expect that they are either back or due very soon.

Thanks to all who have ordered. Our supply is still very good for the clear anodized aluminum long case, and standard length brass, and red, black and clear anodized aluminum.

Ken....you are welcome. Let me know how the two of you like these.

Keith has told me that the long cases are on the way back to him from the anodizer....may arrive today, so all orders currently awaiting will be going out this week or the beginning of next.

I cannot wait...I have 2 on order. Apparently Keith made some slight knurling changes to the prototype to give it a better look and feel.

I have received orders for about 3 dozen of these cases so far, so there are plenty more in this first run batch of 120.

I too received mine yesterday and am very pleased with the quality and constuction.
Now (no one is ever happy)........ how much bigger would it have to be to contain an entire survival kit?
Could we have a survival capsule of this quality for less than $150.00?
