1996, arctic survival school, Eielson AFB. About 1900 we are doing flare training, students poping red nighttime flares. A BIG fireball appears overhead, and flashes to the south. One Tech asks "was that a ufo?" Another student, a Major, at that time assigned to NORAD, told us in a round about way that "you dont know, and your dont want to know".

UFOs are real, but i really don't think our government has a clue has to what they are..natural or alien.

Of course they are real. People have seen things, with the naked eye, backed up by either large numbers, photography, or various sesning systems. A couple million people can't all be wrong. And 99% of them can be identied.

It's that 1% that defy logical (and sometimes farfetched) explination that makes the whole thing so interesting. I've seen things that I sure as heck can't explain, and I have a stronger than average in aircraft AND astronomy.

I seem to remember Jimmy having an encounter with a white rabbit at about the same time. It had large teeth and tried to board his canoe. Unlike many at the time I didn't doubt his sanity--I grew up on Monty Python.

All I saw during arctic survival school were the northern lights. I'm sitting there with a smuggled radio getting russian accordian music and Jimi Hendrix singing ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER, eating my also smuggled Hershey bars and going "Wow man" like John Muir when everybody else was in their survival trench. I grew up with lessons in relations with ' the Good Neighbors' from my great grandmother, Golems from a jewish aunt, Snow demons from the tibetan Bon-Buddhist tradition and initiated into a clan society in a Kiva. Any ET's show up better know their Gaia folklore and fullfill my cultural expectations on peril of their lives. But wait, it gets worse. As a Canadian I have had more than my fill of Lloyd Axworthy. He is an advocate of "soft power". As our Foreign Minister, he thought that Canada should abandon all military effort and instead rely on negotiations at the UN to settle all differences. The guy was and is a total idiot. Just what do you think the North Koreans think of a country that advocates "soft power'' What a dolt!

I don't imagine any aliens will show up here. Remember we have been beeming TV signal into space for what? 50 years now? I figure that anybody within range of the signals has probably fled the area in a panic.

Signal dissapation makes it less likely. I dont' rmemeber the exact number off the top of my head, but by the time you are half a light year out, I worked it out once that you were getting tiny, tiny signals. As in double digit negative exponents of ten for eavery watt the signal started with. At that strength, you are really going to have be hunting for it. Assuming of course they can translate the protocal- they will get AM easily enough, but the video side of TV is less likely.
