When I was a laborer at a landscaping place, it still took me many weeks to work up to covering 40 miles in two days (flat, open terrain) with a 50 lb load.. I started with 30 lbs, and 15 miles a day kicked my butt. You have to harden your feet, or they'll blister, even with proper socks and shoes. A great many of those who "think" that they can "run and gun" with 40 lbs of gear are full of it.

I enjoy hiking in the mountains. Our packs typically weigh 50 lbs. At a leisurely pace I plan 10 miles a day. This allows for ample time to set up camp, gather firewood and prepare meals ? You must also consider that the more people in the group, the slower your progress. Alone I can cover much more terrain?

So 20 miles is quite a lot, I'm not sure how many days in a row someone could keep that up ! <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

You got THAT right!!!
I'm a Laborer by trade (Local 393), and one of the benefits is staying in (relatively) good shape, and being reminded when I'm not. If you're not getting out with your gear on your back on a regular basis, you might be surprised at what a work-out it can be.

20 miles in the mountains is equal to at least 40miles on the flatlands. :-) My comment was about flat, open terrain.

So consider a bicycle with some carrying capibility or a little red wagon, dirt bike etc.

Use the technology -- prepare for multiple emergencies

PS even a $25 bike can go 40 miles in one day carrying a #50 load.

Good point.

I'm currently looking into getting a solid bike, rack and panniers or perhaps instead of that a bike and BOB YAK or IBEX.

I think I like the trailer option more...
