I see by your profile that you are vegitarian.
Why not make up some info cards on your local vegitation that is eatable (or info on the area you will be in)
Also info that maybe required to prepare any plant material harvested. I know some early explorers in Australia died because they seen the Aboriginals gathering plant material, but they didnt see them prepare it to be eaten. (you may want a small magnifying glass to read the small print)

Or to prepare for one of those long term survival situations, throw in a couple of packets of seeds <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
