Probably been thought of already, but I thought I'd bring it up.

The old Alice style 1 qt canteen cover has a pocket for water purification tablets. I carry Micropur MP-1 tablets in them currently, but I noticed this pocket was also the perfect size for one of the spark lite firestarting kits. Seeing as how the rest of the canteen cover seems awefully underutilized, I was thinking about adding a few more pockets.

Perhaps one identical pocket on the opposite side that can carry something like a spark lite firestarting kit, and maybe a larger central pocket that can hold an altoids tin, space blanket, bug repellant, or whatever one can come up with.

What do you think?

Nalgene seems to be the trend lately, but I like the alice connectors since you can hook them up to any belt (not just the web gear) and even just the waistband of your pants if you aren't wearing a belt.

Diamandback tactical makes a 1 Qt. canteen cover with a larger velcro pocket. It's their Battlelab 1 Qt. cantten cover.
I believe he issue Aussie canteen cover also comes with a larger or maybe 2 pockets on it. I'll look around and see if anyone else make something similar.

I added some pockets to an Eagle Tiger Stripe canteen cover, to add survival kit components. I then made a pouch for the shoulder strap (it hangs on my back) which holds a Heavy Dutey Space Blanket rolled tightly. Might give you some ideas. Hopefully, here are some photos.

I have the Y harness,pistol belt with two canteens, M16 mag pouches and first aid breast pocket. My fallkniven's on the belt, compass in first aid ,assorted minimal gear in the mag pockets and a poncho sloppily lashed to the back ( I want an old H harness <img src="/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />) It's my Rambo runaway,runaway kit.

Try the SpecOps HUMP. I think that is what they call it: H-harness, and hydropack carrier. I'm not fond of hydrobladders, myself, but the pouch is big enough for something like rain gear and a sweatshirt.

My preferred canteen cover is a MOLLE FSBE AITES three pocket cover. You can usually find them on eBay. I use this cover as a basis for a water canteen, filter, purification and cooking kit container

As a rule, AITES makes great kit! I have one of these, in ACU, which holds my cooking setup. Unlike the SDS MOLLE canteen cover, the pockets are large enough to actually be useable. I put my PSK altoids tins in one, my Wave, Strealmight flashlight and lighter in another, and the middle one holds my Trangia stove. Yes, a Trangia stove. The main pocket holds my super-Natick stove setup (see this for a description) nested around a GI canteen cup, and another GI cup flipped over and stacked on top. The enclosed volume holds cooking items and essentials. Water is in a seperate 2-quart canteen with an ALICE cover (which I am hoping to replace with either an AITES cover or a Camelbak HAWG - once they make them in ACU).
