I know the size of a ten round tube for paintballs, that's easy to figure out. But how big are the 140 round refill tubes? And are these guys waterproof?
I'm thinking that since I keep seeing them and carriers on eBay, maybe they might make a decent packing system for a kit a bit bigger than a psk, but still easily worn.

yeap, player here and I've worked in a PB store since '92
The 140's are water resistent but not quite water proof. They will take being dropped into a puddle but I wouldn't take one swimming.
they are about 2" in diameter and 10" long. I can get you the exact measurements in the morning. Plus they come in colors so you can pack the red one with fire making supplies and the blue one with water collection supplies.
I have a friend who is like me and into geocaching. He carries a large backpack with everything under the sun in it and alot of parts are in 140 round tubes.
Let me know if you need any help with this..

Cool...
I think I'm going to pick up some of both types, and play with them for a bit. I'm thinking of trimming the ten round tubes to fit in various tins, but the 140s should be good as is for things in BOB. Do they make these with something other than a flip top lid?

Only flip tops for now. Years ago they made some cheaper ones with pull off tops but those are long gone.

Followup:
I just got a pck of the ten round tubes. These things are tough. I could barely pierce them with an xacto knife, but they cut like pine under the Leatherman's saw. Should be tough enough.
I filled one with water, capped it, and left it cap-down in a bowl about half an hour ago. So far, the only time I got a so much as a drop out of it was after shaking it vigerously at about the 15 minute mark for a minute or so, and it was only a drop.
EDIT: We are now at over 5 hours, and still just that one drop. About three hours ago, I put water into three more, and they have also been sitting int he bowl, heads down. I hearby dub them water tight.
Internal diameter is about .7", and the outter dia is about .8". The caps are 7/8" OD on the dot.
I'm thinking, cut some of these down to about 3", add a small mag firestarter, a smaller SAK or similiar, a water bag, and a folded space blanket to the military surplus 12-rnd shotshell carrier, and it should be decent.

At not quite 20 hours, there has been no significant leakage of a waterfilled and capped paintball tube. to be 100%, it would be a matter of a quick wrap with electricans tape.
For the same length of time, I have a had a dab of vaseline on another one, and it shows no signs of degradation.
One can fit a layer of five, quarter inch bits into one of these, so a tube trimmed to 4" inches will hold 20, which should be anough for any emergency mantience we would have to do. They are also the perfect size for carrying CR123sThe lack of threading on the caps means they aren't as secure as I would want, but they can be removed one handed, unlike a threated container. A tube trimmed to three inches will hold 15 full sized matches, three relighting birthday candles, and 3 cotten balls; if you wanted a smaller package, you could use penny matches and get about 20 of them in along with the 3 candles after trimming.
I know, I'm babbling. But these things are dirt cheap and versitle.
