On Your Own in the Wilderness (out of print) by Townsend Whelen is an outstanding reference for anybody interested in thriving in the out of doors. Written 50 years ago, I was amazed how valid Whelens’ advice is today as it was when he put it to paper half a century ago. A few of the topics covered include backpacking in the Central American Jungle to traversing the Great White North on horse back, shooting, cooking, and in general the lost art of being a Woodman (Woodsperson). So, the next time you visit your local used book store look for it.

For those looking for used books, you can’t do better than AbeBooks. Years ago, I used to frequent a peerless, on-line used-book seller called Bibliofind.com, but Amazon bought them back in 2000 and effectively destroyed one of their chief competitors. Soon after, I found AbeBooks, and I have been using them ever since. I have had books come to me from as far away as Australia. Abebooks is a book lover’s dream.

For those looking for long-out-of-print survival books, Abebooks is the place to go. By the way, some sellers will also list their books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well as Abebooks, but I have found that the prices on both Amazon and B&N are consistently higher than on Abebooks for the same exact book from the same exact seller, no doubt because Amazon and B&N charge their used book sellers a higher fee than does Abebooks.

Another used book store to add to one’s list of suppliers is Powell’s City of Books ( http://www.powells.com ). Its history is at http://www.bootsnall.com/namericatravelguides/pdx/dec01powells.shtml . Powell's is the largest independent used and new bookstore in the world. I have never really compared their prices.

In buying a book to throw in your pack or bag, remember the pages have other uses—kindling, note paper, TP. In selecting a book with consideration for the latter use, remember the wisdom passed on by Chic Sales in his book “The Specialist” (1929)—the main character was a specialist in building outhouses. Alternately stated by another, this wisdom is: And then there was the trauma when Sears and Montgomery Ward went to glossy paper in their catalogs. Glossy paper didn't work as pleasantly as the former non-glossy.

Whelen's book is a classic, fitting perfectly alongside Nessmuk, Kephart, Rutstrum and Jaeger.
