Hello, I have been lurking for some time here and have finally signed in.

I have assembled a mini PSK and I plan to do a lot of air travel in the next months (as a commercial passenger). I have searched through the forum for information on carrying on certian items, but many of the posts are from before the heightened airline rules.

What is the consensus on carrying the following items onto an airplane?
1) BCB Wire Survival Saw
2) Large Fish Hook
3) Fishing Kit (small hooks)
4) Sewing Awl
5) Sewing Needles
6) Safety Pins
7) Spark Lite Firestarter Flint
8) Fire Tab Tinders
9) NATO Matches
10) Sparky firestarter
11) Sterling Sharpener

Thank you

I think none of this will be accepted as carry-on.

The items related to fire-making will probably not be allowed as checked-in baggage either. The rest of those should.

My 2 cents. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

So much is at the discretion of the individual screener, despite what is on the TSA web site, so it is hard to say for sure. I would think that all, but perhaps #s 7, 10 and 11 (if that is pencil sharpener) would be prohibited items for carry on.

Here is the poop straight from the horse's mouth, (the fine folks at your friendly neighborhood TSA).

Print this out and keep in your carry on baggage. Follow it to the letter and you should not face much in the way of prison time. <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

My small fire steel and Vaseline impregnated cotton balls have traveled with me several times in my FAK. Mixed with my Band-Aids, alcohol swabs and other clutter I did not have any trouble.
Your spark right will probably look like a lighter on the screen and will probably get them looking at you closer.
For the rest of it study the list before you leave to fly every time as the TSA keeps changing the list as to what is acceptable and what is not.

Based on the feedback, I tested some of these items with the following results:

What is the consensus on carrying the following items onto an airplane?
1) BCB Wire Survival Saw ?
2) Large Fish Hook ?
3) Fishing Kit (small hooks): TSA said they should be fine, I will test next month
4) Sewing Awl: OK to carry on
5) Sewing Needles: OK to carry on
6) Safety Pins: OK to carry on
7) Spark Lite Firestarter Flint: OK to carry on
8) Fire Tab Tinders: OK to carry on
9) NATO Matches: No
10) Sparky firestarter: No
11) Sterling Sharpener: May depend on the screener (my pocket caliper was inspected and it is similar in shape and material)

I love the last paragraph. May I print that and hang it on the door to my cell?

Just read today that the TSA is currently drafting new guidelines for prohibited items which relaxes the post-9/11 standards. Items such as small knives and scissors may be allowed in carry-on again. No specific mention of flammable or fire-starting items, though. The new rules may be in place by the Christmas travel season. Since the new guidelines are still being drafted, no new list to reference yet.

So does that mean we can get metal dinner knives back? Actually, with the fuel cost situation, might as well stick with plastic utensils. Heck, come to think of it, seems like airlines hardly ever serve anything that even requires utensils anymore. Flying 3,000 miles today? Here, have some pretzls. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Plus they have to re-train 45,000 screeners. sigh. They can't do the job properly now.... .
