Hello, This is my first post w/ photo so hang with me... Here are the contents of one of my survival kits that is an amalgam of kits and odd bitts. Its contents are based on the 10 ESSENTIALS and my experience from many years of backpacking. It contains the following from left to right clockwise; BCB tin, flint sparker, tinder, whistle, (4) safety pins, fishing kit, needle, heliograph, thread/fishing line, brass wire, Leatherman Micra, button compass, LED flashlight, small plaster, (2) aspirin, antibiotic ointments, (2) large plasters, scalpel, (2) breast milk/water bags, and (6) Katadyn water purification tablets. I invite you comments and ideas for improvement. I hope that the photo hosting will work... http://tinypic.com/ehzm1v.jpg

Wild Weasel, Great picture! I need to get a digital camera. That is a good merging of the BCB and the Ritter PSP. The 6 areas you have to cover are: fire, first-aid, navigation, shelter, signaling, and water. It looks like all the areas are well covered except maybe shelter. If it was me I would put the Ritter PSP cord back in there to tie a branch for the main support for a debris hut shelter. There may be no trees with lower branches to set the main support branch on. Maybe the thread would work. Do you think the BCB whistle is louder than the Ritter Fox 40 Micro? I was under the impression the Fox 40 was the loudest whistle next to the Storm. I like the SparkLite but I don’t fully trust it. I would put a BSA Hot Spark or some small ferro rod in there. The real question is: is it small enough that you really carry it every time you go off pavement? I have abandoned tins and just carry mini PSK items loose in my pockets. I don’t carry as good a selection of items as you have in your BCB tin. Have you thought of carrying a pocket knife with a saw blade? The SAK Farmer is very popular. I have one, the saw is excellent.

I travel alot for the aeroscace company I work for, including Europe, the Pacific Rim, and Dirkadirkastan (Mid-East). One of my thoughts is to remove the sharps from this kit and make it CARRY-ON friendly. While I always have my computer bag at hand my survival gear must be checked due to the sharps (Micra and scalpel).

It sounds like you are at risk for a terrorist attack.
It seems to me that if you are a frequent flier and spend a lot of time in office buildings and airplanes you need an evacuation kit more than a PSK. If your plane crashes or your building has an event, you will have rescuers there quickly. Here is my building escape kit I keep in my cube: SureFire G2, Fox 40 whistle, bottles of water, goggles, dust mask, snap light, and ThyroSafe. For you I would add a pair of leather gloves and a small first-aid kit with burn treatment items.
I know the best advice when flying is to know the number of seats to the exits. You may need to count the seats by feel in blinding smoke. The leather gloves may save your hands from being burned or cut. If you are in a collapsed building the whistle may be your best bet to let someone know where to dig, to get you out. If you can move the SureFire will cut through the dust to help you find an exit.

I'll second the vote on the saw. If you could find one the size of the folding saws (at the same thickness, some of them have similar tooth patterns) it would replace anything short of a large bow saw

Looks like an excellent kit to me. I have to cast a vote with my neigbor Craig and recommend a SAK Farmer. I have carried an old red handled one on all my trips for years and it is first rate. The reason I choose this over some others is that the main blade is about twice the thickness of a plastic handle SAK. Sturdy! If they just made it a locking blade, I'd be in survival heaven! I have one of the little Leatherman Micras and it bent the first time I used it. I have no luck with Leatherman products, they are cheap metal! I would ditch it myself. Your kit looks like a good mix for it's size. Great pic too!

I cancelled the photo after 15 minutes and still waiting for it to finish. I have a pitiful speed internet.
It looked good from what I did see. I didn't see and you didn't mention the BCB wire saw. Is there ant reason you took it out? I understand it is a good performing item.
I purchased a couple of BCB PSK's reciently, I finally found someone in Australia who sells them. I haven't started using them yet, I've only got as far as opening 1 up to check it out.

In response to your questions on the whistle and saw, I have the following answers. WHISTLES side by side testing between the Fox 40 Micro and the one pictured, an ACR Electronics WW3, gives the nod to the ACR WW3. The ACR has for lack of a better term has, HIGHER BACK PRESSURE, meaning I can blow on it longer on one full breath. For all practical purposes they are each about the same in loudness. SAWS, I have to give the nod to saws available on the Victorinox brand Swiss army knives (SAK). One Christmas I tried to use my BCB wire saw to trim a few branches on my tree with very poor results, it was very prone to binding. Switching to a SAK with a saw made short work of the same job. While backpacking/day hiking I always carry a Victorinox SAFARI or a “Farmer like SAK” with main blade and saw only with metal scales.

The binding wasn't caused by a kink in the wire was it. I realise they aren't perfect, but I still pack them because they can handle a larger log than the smaller saws in SAK's etc. All my multitools I carry have saws and they are always with me, so the tin has the wire saw for backup. In my pack I have the Ultimate Survival Deluxe kit with the pocket chainsaw because its better performer, but this is a bit big for pockets.

That's why I pack a hand chainsaw. Those things require a little dexterity, but once you get used to them, a cord of wood don't seem so big.
