Anybody know of a kit that includes one of these? I looked for the "combat survival kit" from bestglide, but they don't seem to include it, nor does the one pictured on the equipped site Anybody have thoughts on the usefulness of something like this, by the way? It looks like it can be used as a hand tool as well as axe blade

Ive got a couple of those kits, but they didn't have the axe. It looks a bit light wieght, I would go for the wire saw before doing that. My only concern with that is that lots of people who dont usually use axes injure themselves.

It's possible BCB dropped the knife, UK knife laws are pretty strict, though not draconian if you clearly show a legitimate use for your carry. I don't know if this is an axe so much as a clever compromise of deep belly compensating for the short length.

An axe might be another good tool to stock in your tool box. ( along with a shovel, BIG crowbar, protection and gloves)

I was wondering how the small Gerber models worked, like the Back Paxe and the camp size that's a little bigger. Anyone have experience with these?

I've had a Gerber Back Paxe for about six years. I like it: it's relatively light thanks to the hollow fiberglass handle; the edge holds up well during routine use; the nylon sheath is heavy-duty and well-made. Added bonus: depending on the nature of my outing, I sometimes carry a few essentials in the hollow handle ( ~6-cu. in.). Handle-end has pre-drilled holes for lanyard.
Downside: one of its benefits (short handle) also means you don't get much leverage when using it, so if you're undertaking an ambitious bit of chopping, your arm/wrist will get fatigued faster.
I also have an older Gerber folding saw (not the Exchange-a-Blade model). Folded: 6.5-in. Blade: 5.25-in. Small, light, effective.

I don't know if this is an axe so much as a clever compromise of deep belly compensating for the short length. Agreed, I probably should have worded it better! I got all excited because I hadn't seen something like that before <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Given your experience, would something like that be worth making room for, compared to the pocket knives normally associated with going inside PSK's? For trees, I have my pocket chainsaw in my PSK and that has less risk of injury associated with it than a pseudo field axe, but I have to admit the capability to be used in that role did seem pretty attractive.
