I had never heard of this before, so I did a quick google. If this is indeed the right item, they are having a sale right now -- down to $40 from the regular $70. Seems like a neat item.

One thing that bothers me about that land shark bag is it restricting movement in some situations where you need to move quickly. One scenario is an open water storm with high waves. It would seem harder to keep my head above water in wave after wave.

I would also be concerned about severe condensation no matter how big the vent holes are - and if they really were big enough, they'll let too much wind/rain anyway. Any experiences I have had in non-porous enclosures have been moist to the point of dangerous. The exception is the more extreme alpine conditions most of these botha bags seemed to be designed for. For close off the trail shelter, I think you might do a lot better with a lightweight inexpensive polytarp as described (for example) in The Ray-Way Tarp Book...

Regarding the Adventure Medical Kits (AMK) Bivvy Sack: I faced this decision not too long back. For me, it was either the Land/Shark or the AMK Bivvy and I chose the Bivvy, mostly because it was so much lighter and, as near as I can tell, more compact. Lighter and more compact was important because the Bivvy is a woods-EDC item for me and assumes I am caught without my full-size backpack and tent. The Bivvy strikes me as a good balance between the lighter, too-fragile emergency shelters (e.g., Space Blanket) and the heavier, more robust Land/Shark. Since I only recently received the AMK Bivvy, I haven’t had a chance to test it myself.

Did you see the part about it being a great way to hide from IR detection? Very cool (heh) if true.
