Looked thru the FAQ's found "Images". Does this include pictures? Also noted that examples were .gif images. Can I post a .jpeg? I'm sure there are a lot of new members out there wondering the same thing. This forum doesn't abound in photos as much as others and I believe it is because a lot like me simply don't know how. Again, keep it SIMPLE. I don't have a Masters in computer programming! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Please touch on how to control the size. I have the ACDsee program but I haven't completely mastered it yet. Sent an email photo the other day and it arrived about the size of a 9X12 rug!! Took recipient three days to download and I was instructed to NEVER send any more photos! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Well, I do. Let's see if that makes any difference. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In order to post an image, the image file needs to already be available on the web. Usually, you either put it on your own web site, or on one of the commercial image hosting websites.

If you want, PM me, and I'll host the image for you. After that, you stick special codes into your post that tell the forum (your browser, actually, but there's that useless computer science stuff raising it's ugly head. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) how to find the image.

Example:

Let's say I have a picture of an Aqua Tainer on my web site. The url (the "address") of the image is http://www.kinetickill.com/images/aquatainer.jpg

Now, I want to include it in my post. Here's what you'll type (ignore the code: part):
<pre><font class="small">code:</font><hr>
This is what I use for water storage.
</pre><hr>

That gives you this:

This is what I use for water storage.

I'll extend this offer to any ETS member... I'll host your pics for you if you want, just PM me.

Thanks Groo for your response. I basically understand what you are saying but a few questions have already popped up. I may not be able to get into this until after October 11th. I am madly packing for a fall camping/turkey hunting trip to the Missouri Ozarks. Leaving Friday morning. I'm sure by then other questions will have surfaced from other members.
Thanks again. I appreciate your help. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

No prob. Let me know if there's anything I can help with. Have fun on the trip. I'm originally from up there... went to grad school in Rolla. Dad says it's really starting to cool off. *sigh*

A good, free site for photo hosting is photobucket.com. They have several tutorials about how to get your images online, like this one. The free account should work fine for your purposes.

Most photo editing software has a resize function, which will resize (or "resample") your image to make it smaller. You usually specify the new size in inches or pixels (dots). The easiest way to get the hang of this is to play with it a bit -- resample some images and see what you end up with. Use the "undo" function if you don't like what you get.

But, the easiest way to get small images is to do it at the camera end. Every digital camera lets you change the image resolution, which is the major factor in determining the picture size you get. So, you can take low-resolution pictures if you intend to post them on the web. A 640x480 image would fit very nicely on a site like this. (A 5 megapixel image is enormous and there's very little reason to ever take high-res pictures like that for most people.)

Hope this helps a little!

Never been to Rolla. Further North than we go besides there are too many city slicker hunters around there from St. Louis. <img src="/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
We are going to Texas County (county seat HOUSTON??) on the Jack's Fork River. I order my USGS topos from the Rolla office. Love the Ozark hills in the fall. Get on your ATV and ride forever. <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Any turkey hunters out there stop by. We are hunting the Gist Ranch, formerly Kinard Ranch. Owned by MDC and has three public campgrounds (no facilities). We are on Ranch Road at the East campsite. 12,000+ acres of public hunting. Non resident turkey permit $95. Season open entire month of October. Limit two turkeys, either sex. <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Tent camping OK. Travel trailer, generator, AC and satellite TV better. Roughin' it!!!! <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Groo,

You Da Man!

Simple answer and a generous offer to host images. You have earned my respect. (The list is small, but distinguished).

The hint that I really appreciated (not sure where I heard it) is to ....

Find the picture you want to post on the web somewhere (anywhere) so that the picture is displayed on your browser. The important point that Groo was mentioning is that if its your personal picture, then you'll have to find a way to get it posted up on the web. Others have covered that real well.

Now move your cursor over the picture and right-click on the picture (press the mouse button on the right side - most people usually use the left mouse button to do their clicking, but this time you should use the button on the right side). In Microsoft's browser you'll see a dialog box pop up. Click (left click) on the Properties command at the bottom of the dialog box and you'll get a Properties dialog box. Notice that the third line in that dialog box as something called Address that looks like a web site address (a URL). That is the text that you want to enter into your forum message that will be converted into a picture.

Highlight that address starting from the right side of the text making sure to include the whole address including the http part and the .jpg (or whatever format it is) part. With the address highlighted hold the Ctrl key down and then press the C key. This (Ctrl + C) copies the address for later pasting.

In some forums you can just paste (Ctrl + V) the address into the text of your message, and once posted it will display the image. I think that is the way the ETS forum works.

In other forums you will need to find an "Image" or "Picture" command (usually near the text entry box - in the ETS forum it is in a group labeled "Instant UBB Code" below and to the right of the text entry box. Click on Image or Picture command. This either gives you a dialog box to paste the address, or inserts some code into the message into which you are supposed to paste the address.

If available, use the preview feature to see if the image is displaying like you think it should.

This sounds confusing, but it will quickly become second nature to you after a few times.

Give it a try. Try right clicking on Groo's aquatainer picture, copy the address where the picture is posted on the web, and then paste the address into a new ETS forum message to see if you can repost inside your message. We're a patient lot ... usually.

Groo PM'd me mentioning that it is considered bad netiquette to insert links to other people's/companies' web site images. that is good to know. If you find a picture that you wish to post - assuming it isn't copyrighted - you really should save it locally and upload it to your own picture site (as recommended by others) before inserting a link to it in a forum message.

Thanks Groo!

QUESTION: How can a free picture storage site be, well, free? Do they live off of advertizing? Are there time limits to the storage of pictures or other restrictions on their sites?

This is definitely true with one notable exception: companies that sell directly to the general public don't necessarily mind hotlinking (that's what this is called) to product images because it can bring business to their sites.

There are also potential copyright problems with hosting your own copy of the image.

This is one of those tangled internet issues that has yet to be entirely worked out. Also, websites can certainly prevent hotlinking if they so desire and some do.
