There are some folks saying they fill their tank when it gets to half empty. That means filling every one or two trips for those of us who drive moderate distances, for most cars. E.g. my Civic has about 350 mile range (10.6 gal tank, 35 mpg). The Insight hybrid has the same 10.6 gal tank but gets about 70 mpg so it can go 700 miles which gets you a lot further out of Dodge if no gas is available. Plus it's "greener", etc.

There's also the idea of a secondary vehicle, that you might have anyway, like a trail bike, mountain bike, minivan, camper, or whatever. Or if you already happen to drive a 4x4 or pickup, maybe you want a trailer for it as some have described. Or if you're shopping for a pickup, maybe you want to choose one with towing capacity.

I'm a part owner of a dilapidated cargo minivan acquired for moving computer equipment around but in fact almost never used. I'm imagining setting it up as a camper for recreational purposes but that could come in handy in all sorts of situations.

I fill every 1/2 tank or MORE often - but I don't drive that much - the truck has a 20 gal tank, and gets 12 mpg city - so every 120 miles....

My OLD truck (which in many many ways I wish I still had) got 22 mpg city, and had a 30 gal extended range tank - I LOVED that - 300+ miles between fillups - aka I'd actually fill < 1/month (told you I don't drive much)

That said - I got the truck for reasons OTHER than bug out - but there are 4 large boxes of bug out/emergency gear stowed in the truck

I guess what I`m saying is to plan multiple bug-out plans because you are never going to know what is going to happen.

I've been thinking about this and if someone has good ideas about how to do it, I'd appreciate some input.

I've talked with my wife for a long time about the fact that we need a communication and bugout plan. But I am assuming that if we need to bugout, and we were separated beforehand (i.e. both at work, kids at daycare) how would we implement it?

I thought about choosing four locations out of town, one north, south, east and west, in case the reason for bugout blocks the route to the primary site. But then how do we decide which one to go to next? What if two are inaccessible, etc.?

Yes, maybe a little neurotic, but...

without comm, i would say pick them in order of accessibility. comm will be the key, as it is in most instances where lives are in danger.
