Has anyone else wondered why the Victorinox co. does not include the most important tool on their knives? SAK have all sorts of removable doodads, such as toothpicks, pens, etc. Why not include a removable diamond rod to sharpen the blade. At least, I have never seen one.

There are a couple of Victorinox sharpeners. A small fine grit stone is included in the SwissChamp SOS set and there is at least one pocket sharpener manufactured by V'nox.

I don't know how feasible it would be to include a sharpener in the knife itself. I'm sure they could find a way, but probably they don't feel it would bump up their sales. After all a lot of Victorinox customers don't ever sharpen their SAKs (I'm pretty sure SAKs are the most popular knife with the no-knife crowd) and us knife nuts have a closet full of sharpeners. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

At most gun or knife shows you can get a leather carrier for your SAK with a small rod mounted on the side.

The very newest Leatherman tools are supposed to have 'tool switcher' function that allows you to remove the diamond file.

I have two of them. It is only a steel, not a diamond rod.

Yes, along with 'why don't they include a firesteel' Over at SOSAK on knifeforums, we have a few members who have modified their SAKs to include a firesteel. You may want to check it out.

Actually, the shapening stone in their survival / traveller kits are simple and effective. Even simpler still is to convex grind your sak and touch up the edge with some 1000 grit sandpaper you can keep in your wallet or strop it on a piece of cardboard.

Since my explorer blade has been semi convexed, the only thing I need to do to touch up the blade is to strop it on some cardboard to restore the hair popping edge......

Convexed SAKs rock! It's very easy to do, they hold an edge longer and a little stroping on your jean's leg is all it takes to keep them sharp on the field.

I did a review of a convexed GAK and it outcut quite a few knives (it was easily beaten by my BRK&T Mountaineer, though).
