Am about to buy a new cell-phone. The best I´ve found so far is the Nokia 5140i
In short it got all the usual(mp3,camera,java compatible) and the following not so usual:
GPS (as accesory shell)
Thermometer
Built in lightsource
Compass
FM-radio
Sturdily built and water resistant
I weighs only 100g, standby time is 150-300 hrs..

The price tag here is around 700-800$ (incl. the GPS shell)

Anyone got this model? What do you think? (I´m especially interested in how good the GPS is)
Any other phone-suggestions?

/Petter

Personally, I'd stay away from the all-in-one wonder gadgets.

For a $100-200 you can get a good, basic standalone GPS.

As far as a compass, you'd also do much better with a good standalone model. $50 will get you one heck of a compass.

I had a Nokia phone recently that had a small LED "flashlight", an FM radio, and a camera in it. The only reason I got it was because it was free with the calling plan, so the price was right. What a mistake! I had the *worst* call quality I'd ever had, the camera was horrible, and the FM radio left a lot to be desired. And I'm a big Nokia fan.

My opinion: Get a basic no-frills cell phone, get a quality GPS and a quality compass.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'll think it over one more time then.

I'd tend to agree with the simpler is better thinking. Look for a phone that is unobtrusive enough that you'll carry it all the time. Make sure it has text messaging (sometimes gets through when a voice call won't) and A-GPS (allows emergency services to find you when calling 911 from a cell). And buy two accessories: 1) A cheap leather or neoprene case to take the bumps and scratches and 2) A high capacity battery. There's an online store, westsidecellular.com, where I got a leather case and a factory original hi-cap battery for about $20. I can leave my phone on for a week now, even with making calls. That's my $.02.

Agreed. Do your research. Unless you are convinced you need a mobile phone that does everything, don't get that kind of gizmo.

I loved my startac, but they wont activate them anymore since they arn't gps enabled. That was the ultimate phone. It was simple, had two different places for extended batteries, and was tough as could be. It seems all the phones out now are junk.
