From Fark:

Man rescued after waving lighter.

From the article:

The 32-year-old was stuck in an area of 8ft high bushes on a cliff face at Primrose Valley near Filey until he was seen waving a lighter on Tuesday.

This article gives a few more details. Once again, gambling and alcohol prove to be harmful to one's well-being

Sounds as though he deserved that rough night, for behaving so childishly. I am glad he got rescued, though.

Ooooh! These blackberry bushes are sharp and thick... Let's go deeper into them!

The more detailed article mentions something about beer being involved.

The reason I originally posted this (and forgot to comment on) was the whole "signaling with a lighter" thing. Turns out the helicopter didn't see the lighter, someone on the ground did. And I guess here's another "whistles are better" example, since he said he shouted for a while.

Gorse reminds me of pyracantha (sp?). Makes a good security hedge under windows if you control it. Pyracantha has 1" thorns that will pierce running shoes.

p.s. It's also difficult to get rid of. You can cut it off to nothing but stumps & it will sprout new limbs for years.

Pyracantha is plain nasty. I was told they have banned the sale of it around here. I think they classified it as a noxious weed, but the only thing really noxious about it was the thorns.
