I`m just curious what everyones' bug out bag weighs? Mine is a lot heavier than I thought and I haven't even weighed it with the sleeping pad, and bag attached to it. I think my FAK may be a little 'over the top' but it's also an important aspect.

Weight and details for my bob coming later.. its HEAVY

I try to keep mine as close to 20lbs as I can, my knees rebel when I try to add what I really want to carry...

i`d like to add another question...

Since you can't have ALL of waht you want in your bag what do you "take out" first? If you have a hand chain saw do you remove an axe? That's the first thing I think I would remove is my axe. I have a hand chainsaw, a saw on my SAK, and an army saw I think I could live without an axe but then again mayne not? (Hand chainsaw rusts, sak saw breaks, army saw brakes and im screwed?).

Mine is a constant work in progress but currently weighs about 13 pounds. That's also without a sleep roll. I'm sure it will have another 3 or 4 pounds in it by the time I'm through (if that ever happens). Mine is in a rugged but fairly lightweight backpack. I know of some people with wheeled duffel bags that probably weigh a good 50-60 pounds, but I feel that ease of mobility is an important consideration.

Mine weighs maybe 30 lbs, mostly because of all the water I have to keep in it. Otherwise maybe 10 to 15 lbs max.

I can make a field expedient axe (hatchet) easy enough, I can't replicate a good hand chain saw for cutting, though.

Now if I could just do something about the weight of all that body armor...

I'm out at the lake this weekend so It's not easily accessible for weighing but IIRC it's 30lbs. This includes about a gallon of water and 4 days food for 3 people. I'd love for it to be lighter but having the food and water in this backpack kit/BOB is the key thing that separates it from my other, smaller, lighter kits.

34 pounds, but it is illusory. It is not meant to be carried over your shoulde for any length or timer, but is rather a receptacle for gear to be pulled.

I don't understand the purpose of all this camping gear in BOB's unless you actually live in or near the woods. How many people do?

It's not camping gear it's primative methods for multiple tasks. Some include fire starting, shelter making, food gathering, and water preperation. While it may seem like 'camping gear' (as most could be/is) it's the 'essentials' you would need to get by 'on the run' bugging out to your bug-out place. Atleast in my eyes this is the goal... and if you have your gear in your BOB you can hike and "camp" on your way or drive and "camp" on your way while bugging out.

It just seems like camp gear because in modern times that's what we call sleeping in the woods.

And to answer your question I live within hiking distances of the woods, and visit them often and cary a modified version of my BOB. Today I was at 6500ft+ and almost got 'stuck' but I had my gear and was ready to stay a night or two if we needed too.

No real "camping" gear in mine. No tent, no sleeping bags. Though I do have a couple Storm Shelter Instant pocket tents which make decent emergency bivy bags and a couple of 9'x12' sheets of painter plastic that I can fashion in to a pretty impressive tarp shelter. My BOB is mostly food ration and water, a very comprehensive FAK, specialty items for my son (diapers, etc) and a few essential tools, signaling gear and other such equupment. Sure, I'm leaving a lot out but if I keep going then I might as well just past the list.
