Haven't people learned from Aaron Ralston? Another hiker lost in Utah, Bryan Butas went hiking and hasn't been seen or heard from since.
Why go hiking in the Canyons or Desert Country without telling anyone and most of all with out a phone or PLB, Doug you have stressed over and over again about being prepared

It never ceases to amaze me how under-prepared people can be, even avid outdoorsmen/women.

That is some unforgiving country over there in Utah. Hopefully this missing hiker makes it out OK and in one piece.

I know it's different for everyone but just as an example, cell signals don't exist in lot of the places I go hiking (some of which really aren't even all that remote), especially if you have a digital-only cell like a Blackberry. PLBs on the hand... they'll be great once the technology is refined a little more and the price point comes down.

In case I missed the post Bryan Butas has been found an Australia, He "disappeared" for financal reasons hoping his kids could collect on his insurance, He is facing Insurance fraud and"hopefully" he will have to repay the county and state for his SAR.
