I scanned a copy of many important travel documents, including passport, credit cards (front & back) This is encrypted. Medical records and emergency contact info is in the simplest .doc file I can create and is NOT encrypted. My 128MB flashdrive cost $15.00, and hangs on a keychain. I think this is a great idea, Benjamin.
